Feeling preemtively embarrassed over nothing

I know it's silly to be embarrassed over this but I am. I've worked at an animal shelter for a couple months and I've really fallen in love with one of the puppies. I finally brought my partner over to meet him and we decided we'd like to adopt him if we can. Turns out another potential adopter had him on hold for another day because they were scheduled to introduce their dog to him and another puppy they were considering to make sure they get along. If the other adopter decides not to adopt, we'll be free to do so, but we'll have to wait and see.

I don't mind if the other person adopts him, I just want to make sure he goes to a good home. But now my coworkers know I'm actually interested in adopting him and for whatever reason I'm so embarrassed by that, and I'd be even more embarrassed if the other person adopted him first, like I was silly for even asking or that I moved too late. It's not even that I think my coworkers would make fun of me, but I'm feeling really anxious at the idea that I'll have them all saying "sorry you couldn't adopt him".

I'm just feeling very "don't look at me" right now and I don't know what to do :(

(I'm also emotional because my current dog is really getting older and I'm trying to be strong but it's hard)
