My memory is getting weaker day by day...
I have a terrible memory.
As I grow older, it feels like my memory is becoming softer around the edges, like things disappear before I even realize I was holding them. I forget simple things, small conversations, little details of ordinary days. Sometimes I forget things I genuinely wish I could remember.
But somehow, my mind made an exception for him.
I remember the first date I saw him.
I remember what he was wearing.
I remember how he first appeared.
I remember those exam days when we didn't even know each other, when I was just another person somewhere in the same room....yet I remember every detail of him from head to toe.
I remember what he did those days and then......
I remember the day he became my exam partner.
I remember all the clothes he wore during those seven days.
The shoes.
The hairstyles.
The smallest changes in his appearance.
I remember seven little moles across his face seven tiny marks my memory somehow decided were worth keeping.
Five of them are on one side, scattered from beneath his eye down toward his cheek, almost like someone connected tiny dots across his face, the way stars seem to fall into patterns in the night sky.
One on the another side near his lips, and my favorite has always been the one beside his right eye
I remember his voice.
Not just the sound of it, but how it changed depending on who he was talking to.
How it became louder and more playful when he was joking with someone.
How it softened when he spoke gently.
How it became more serious when he was explaining something.
How even the rhythm of his words seemed to change with different people.
I remember his smile too.
Not just the smile, but all the different versions of it.
The wide, effortless smile when something genuinely amused him.
The smaller one when he was trying not to laugh.
The knowing little smile when he was teasing someone.
The polite smile he gave when he was simply being friendly.
And the softer smile that appeared in quieter moments.
I don't know why I remember these things.
I just do.
I remember how he looked three months ago and how different he looked when I saw him again.
His old hairstyle.
His new hairstyle.
The clothes.
The way he carried himself.
And then there was that red.
The colour I've always hated.
Somehow, when he wore it, it looked beautiful.
I remember where I was standing when he appeared.
I remember who I was talking to.
I remember how unexpected it was.
I remember seeing him three times that day.
I remember wanting to look at him every single time.
I remember being too nervous to look when he was close.
I remember looking at him from behind.
I remember him turning around.
I remember that he wasn't smiling that day.
And somehow, I remember that too.
I remember his social-media stories.
The songs he chose for them.
The strange little habit of attaching music to moments.
I remember the songs.
The stories.
The pictures.
The details I probably had no reason to memorize.
It's almost absurd.
My memory forgets the ordinary things that should matter.
But when it comes to him, it becomes an archivist.
It doesn't just remember that he smiled.
It remembers how he smiled.
It doesn't just remember his voice.
It remembers how his voice changed depending on the person standing in front of him.
It doesn't just remember what he wore.
It remembers the colour, the shoes, the hairstyle, the little details.
It's as though my mind quietly decided that ordinary life could be forgotten...
but him had to be preserved.
And maybe that's the strangest part.
I don't know whether I remembered him because he mattered,
or whether he became important because my mind remembered him so carefully.
All I know is that I can forget pieces of my own days...
yet somehow, when it comes to him,
my memory has never once forgotten to remember.
No matter how much of my life my memory forgets,
No matter how many names, faces, and moments fade with time....
Even if one day I forget everything, even if I forget myself, I know one thing with a certainty
I would still remember him... Forever.
