Going Nowhere
My name is Callum and I am 14. Recently I was accepted into an exclusive theatre company based on my performance in a school production. Every night I think that I'm going nowhere in life. I have never had any experience professionally. I have no real achievable prospects for the future. I want to feel loved for who I can be, and not who people want me to be. My friends are immature imbeciles and I can't get a girl to like me for more than five minutes. I suffer from multiple mental health disorders like MECD and Aspergers. I'm getting over the suicide of a close uncle and I am alone. Simply alone.
Hey, getting accepted into the theater company is a big deal! You're totally going somewhere even though you're only 14. I'm about to graduate college and I feel like I'm not going anywhere either. I think that's how people who are driven to succeed feel often. Use that to keep striving towards your goals rather than being angry about it. I know it's hard. There are plenty of days when I feel upset because I'm not where I want to be.
Sorry you've been feeling this way lately, @BreakingBaddest! I'm also very sorry for your loss and that you're feel alone, especially at this time. I imagine both of these things add a lot of extra weight to how you are feeling.
In what you have written, it seems to me that youhave raised two issues:a dissatisfaction with the kinds of people around you and a lack oflife experience. Building a supportive network of people around you (that you like!) is very important and finding ways to gain more satisfaction from your accomplishments whilst you are building up to larger goals can be helpful too.
Being youngand presumablyonly just starting to get on your way to your preferred career path, I could understand if you are feeling anxious about the future. A lot of people are in the same boat! But I hope that, when you feel this way, you are able toremember that you do have time to build up a portfolio, you're in a great position for growth given your being accepted into the theatre company too and the fact that you were accepted into that company is an accomplishment that you can be proud of (congratulations!!) and could potentially be used to give you confidence in your abilities thus far - even if this doesn't necessarily ease this feeling of going nowhere.
TelseCat gaven an interesting proposalregarding trying to deterdetermination from turning into frustration. It reminded me of this quote:"Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are." - Malcolm S. Forbes.
Generally speaking, whenwe think we are going nowhere in life, there are often a number of reasons that may be behind this that are independent of whatever kind of life we are living (which is why we can sometimes feel this way no matter what we do!).
For example, sometimes it's hard to feel we have achieved things if we have not achieved what others want us to (as the lack of approval and/or support can stopus from being able to feel this way), or we worry due to lacking the ability to look into the future and begin to doubt ourdecisions (creating anxiety that we're going down a wrong route), or even feel that we are going down paths that are lacking in our true passions... the list goes on!
Identifying the kind of thinking behind why one perceives themselves as having achieved little due to variousfactors (or a lack of them) can be very helpful in learning howto feel more confident in our lives and our progress within them.In addition, you might then find that identifying what could make you feel as if you are going somewhere beneficial too.
I hope you feel better about things soon, and I wish you all the best!I'm also glad you reached out to us here on 7Cups for support and hope it is of some help to you.
Thank you for your help and support. To be honest, I have nothing of myself which I overvalue. I have nothing to overvalue. Other people hold me back because they feel as though they can determine my future.
No problem! & Yes, the quote was about overvaluing the things we are not (the things we do not have/have not achieved, etc). I think that in your mentioning that you have been accepted into such a company yet also that you have no proof of your accomplishments perhaps goes with the quote, as it speaks of undervaluing what you are (and what you have done/achieved, etc).
As for the people in your life, trying to dictate it... that can be very draining to deal with! Would something like this article be helpful, do you think? Or perhaps this one. I think trusting yourself, having confidence in yourself, becoming assertive and knowing that, irrespective of their opinions, you are the one who ultimatelydetermines where you want to take things in lifeare all important things to consider! It can sometimes feel as if they have the power because they can be such largeinfluences on us and our thinking, but it is possible to get others out of our heads and gives ourselves a well-needed rest and a clearer mind as a result! (Although sometimes easier said than done).
