How does one move out and be self sufficient?

I had another breakdown last night in the shower. It wasn't pretty.

But I think I learned something from this. A lot of the self depreciating talk that was going through my head was targeted at one thing:

I haven't become self sufficient yet. At least not completely.

I got a job while I was in high school. I got my first car. Two cars, actually, if you count the one I have now. But a lot of these things we're just given to me by Mom and Dad. I'm not trying to sound ungrateful, it's just that I feel like I was never encouraged to move out. To be my own person. To experience the world for what it is. I feel like I'm trapped in this protective bubble that I created in my mind.

I want to break it, but I don't know how. I have about 5.8k to my own name, but no job. And since I'm in school still, none of the jobs I feel like I can get will pay any higher than 10$ an hour in my area (semi-rural small town in AL. Nothing here but retail and crappy restraunt). Trying to get into an intern program at my school, but that's still in the works.

But I think the reason I feel this way is because I've developed some sort of mental chain that binds me to my parents house. To its safety, to its security, and to its comfort. I feel undeserving of it because I haven't made my own life. And some days, I just feel like a burden to them, and setting a bad example for my sister. But now that I've recognized this, I want to break out of it.

How do you move out for the first time and be self sufficient? Where would be a good starting point?

@Nick8876 I think this is a great question. It would be great if this topic had its own section in the forum. I'm trying to figure this out myself. I have a low-paying job (I'm lucky I even got that! but it works for me to start at least since I'm disabled due to mental illness and don't want to start out full-time right now) and can afford my own car but don't know if I'll be able to live on my own. I'm in my late 20s still living with my dad (mostly due to me getting mentally ill years ago and stopping work, moving home).

As far as feeling bound to your parents house, I think that's normal to a certain extent. Due to my circumstances though (my mom dying, my dad only having so much money to live in the house), I'm forced to move towards self-sufficiency. If there are no pressing circumstances calling you to move, then consider yourself lucky.

I think it comes down to getting a job that pays enough to live on your own. Once you have that (enough money) you're set. I'm not sure if I can get assistance in some way, I'm still looking into that.
