Insomnia experience

I've suffered from insomnia a majority of my life and am curious as to why in the recent year I have been suffering from severe panic attacks and almost hullucination like experiences when not being able to sleep.

I have always been paranoid, especially when watching TV, being on the laptop or listening to loud music on my headphones but I have been hearing people shouting my name in the distance, family members I assumed and then when taking off my headphones realising no one is awake. I will then start hyperventilating before feeling almost paralysed, my heart and mouth heavy, suddenly hypersensitive to my surroundings, terrified and sweaty.

I often feel like someone is in the room next door when the door is open glaring at me and frequently see someone leaning next to me glaring at me uncomfortably close to my face, it's absolutely petrifying and as silly as it sounds I can genuinely see this gargoyle type frail looking man sneering right by my ear, I can feel, see and hear him and I am in such shock that I do not and cannot move. This lasts a few minutes although it feels like hours, I will then venture off to bed before realising I have been lying awake for over an hour and then come back downstairs and occupy myself on the laptop or flicking through channels until it gets light, this is often a vicious circle and it scares me to death.

Anyone have any idea? x

Hello Ironic!

I found it curious that you mentioned that you go through anxiety attacks before you mentioned you experience auditory hallucinations. Anxiety and auditory hallucinations can be linked together, so perhaps that is why you are experiencing them. However, it is a common experience to hear someone calling your name, even if they aren't. I've had the same experience too!

What you said about your nightmarish visions in your mind while you are alone, is definitely something I relate to. I know this may sound like a silly question but are you listening or watching anything scary before you get these creepy feelings? Sometimes I will accidentally think of a scary movie or just think of a scary vision that will set me off. Other times I will be experiencing anxiety, so being on edge is definitely something that can set off those feelings. Perhaps you can relate to my experiences.

I hope this helps a little, take care! heartxx

@KindListening Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I figured it was down to anxiety. Also, I'm not sure, It's usually when I've knocked a video/film off and I'm sat in silence or I'm feeling anxious or sad that triggers it, glad to know others are experiencing similar things!!xx
