Starting over
Hi, I'm Mitch. I'm 61 and I got laid off 3 weeks ago. Now I'm struggling with trying to find another job. At my age, I'm supposed to be getting ready to retire, but now I have to start all over again. I'm afraid, I'm angry, and I'm so anxious. I put out 20-30 applications every day, but as of yet, no responses. Money is running out. I'm trying so hard not to lose hope and not fall back into my black hole, but each passing day makes it more difficult. I really don't know what I am going to do.
As long as you don't give up hope and keep trying and stay determined. My brother in law who lives w/my husband and I is 52 years old and just got fired from his job of 15 years in June. But since June, he hasn't put much effort into finding another job; he just seems to be taking a long vacation. My husband and I have an auto shop and he has come to help every week, but that doesn't pay his part of living expenses which I think he is starting to believe. He also has depended on me to make his resume and fill out his applications! A 52 year old man, but acting like a child. I know it is harder for older people to find jobs b/c employers look at age regardless of the person's wonderful work experience, education, etc. But as long as you stay determined and keep trying, I think you will eventually find something. Do not be like my brother in law. Maybe he is in denial, but depending on me and his younger brother to support him will be ending very soon. I don't want him to be homeless, but we have to take care of ourselves and he is not our responsibility. I wish you all the best. You will find a job soon I'm sure. In the meantime, keep my little story in mind b/c you should be proud that you are trying and at least making it on your own. My brother in law is just pitiful, yet he criticizes people everyday .. He has no ambition whatsoever except to drink a whole 12 pack of Miller Lite. Well, good luck.
