Think I'm a Mind Reader

I have this problem where I tend to think I know what other peoples thoughts or responses to things will be. It's not that I worry about what they think of me so much as I decide I know what they will think and I act according to that. For example not inviting people to someththing because I think they wouldn't be interested anyway, or it will be too far for them to travel etc. My current issue relating to this is initiating sex with my husband, I think 'he won't be interested because (insert reason)' and so I don't end up doing it.

I think my only solution to this is that every time I start doing it I need to remind myself that I don't KNOW that this is what they'll think and I need to just put it out there and let them decide themselves. I'm curious to know if anyone else has/had this problem and have any other tips for how to break this habit.

Hi! Yes I've had this problem before and it's a great idea to say that you don't really KNOW what the reason is.

The other questions you could ask yourself -

- What makes me think that this thought is true?

- Where is the evidence that this has to be true?

- Is there any other thought that person could be having?

- Am I falling into this mindreading trap again?

- The last time I thought this was true, how helpful or accurate was it?

- If this was true, what's the worst that could happen and how could I cope with it?
