"Coming out" with diagnoses

I'm going to do a therapy program, and I've realized that this means I need to tell my parents that I've self-diagnosed as autistic/borderline personality disorder.

This is not something I have considered lightly, and I have done my research. I'm sure about both things.

The problem is that my parents are both very anti-label. They're still insisting that I'm "normal." I don't want to be normal. I want to be me.

Any advice is appreciated.

Is there any reason you have to give them the label before starting the therapy? Do you think they might be more apt to respect the opinion of the therapist, or that it might be easier with the therapist "backing you up" so to speak?

Best of luck with everything, I know that dealing with parents can be really hard sometimes. Hugs!

Hi there,

I thought I'll post as just a few things, firstly, please even if you think you have any symptoms do see someone like a doctor or a physcologist to diagnose you. The reason for this as there will be more support available for you- as it affects your lifestyle not just on aspect. Never self diagnose.

Also, coming from two different perspectives, the first as I have a degree in Education, in all honestly if you were to show elements of being Autistic, your parents would have had a diagnosis by the time you started school, if it did not occur then most teachers would have been able to spot certain traits. Now BPD and ASD both affect the brain differently, oneis more inherited and the other through certain enviornment factors/ trauma- I would be suprised to see both at once.

I have experience with ASD as my sister has the severe form, she was born with it and believe me since she was 4 she was diagnosed, in most cases it in when people are a toddler normally.

From what I understand on a personal and professional level, you cannot have therapy as such for being Autistic- you cannot get rid of it if you have it, it is just a different form of brain development.

My advice, if you want this done professionally and actually get some help, (as therapy for something if you don't have it could damage and not actually help in the long run) go to the doctor and explain what you think and they might be able to get a ed physcologist etc to identify the factors.

I really wish you the best of luck, but please take my advice on board!

(If we all looked up on the internet for self diagnosied things, I'm sure all of us would get worried we have something worse than we already have, lol.)

Hope you are well!
