Is your therapist patronizing/condescending?
Hi all,
I seem to have experienced several therapists who are really patronizing and don't adjust to what I am looking for from therapy. I'm starting to feel this is maybe common for the field in general? Has anyone else experienced this? I hope I find a better one, but I'm not having a lot of luck at the moment.
Best,
Day

Hello there! I find this sometimes as well! I guess it's a problem that's not uncommon, even though what you experinced should not be happening.
I've experienced this... it's also when I finally figured out when it's time to "fire" my therapist. Before that I just assumed they had a degree and knew what they were doing, but when I realized I found what this guy was saying - really, how he was saying it - was insulting, I knew it wasn't worth seeing him anymore.
At the same time, I think sometimes professionalism can come off as condescension when that's not at all what's going on. While a therapist can provide warmth and a sympathetic ear, their professional role is not to be your best friend. Nevertheless, whether the therapist's behavior is reasonable and professional does not mean they are going to be effective for you. You are actually the world's leading expert on how your own therapy is going and in general you should trust your own judgment!
Hello Day,
I have felt this as well. One therapist in particular, the whole of the session felt uncomfortable and patronising, although she probably didn't mean it. It wouldn't do well for a therapist to make their clients feel this way!
With the therapist I'm working with currently -- I felt he was being patronising, but after thinking about how I really felt at that point, it was more a reflection upon myself. I annoyed at myself, and my pride was wounded. He has been nothing but kind and supportive, and I think I was projecting my own feelings by thinking he was being patronising. Could this have happened with you at all?
You've said ".. don't adjust to what I am looking for from therapy." May I ask what you are looking for? :)
@JBlue makes excellent points. You also know what is best for you, and whether they are helping or not. It isn't nice to open up to someone, and have them be unsupportive or patronising. You deserve a kind therapist, and I hope you find one.
Take care
