heartWhen you're living with a mental health condition, you may wonder whether or not to talk about it with your significant other. And if youre single, you may wonder if having a mental health condition rules out romance for you. Its important to know that many people with serious mental illnesses have strong, supportive, long-term relationships. A good relationship provides valuable social support during difficult times, whereas a bad relationship can worsen your symptoms, particularly in cases of depression.

I think that living with a mental illness absolutely does not rule out having a relationship. A supportive, healthy relationship can actually help someone cope with their mental illness. I think the trickiest part is probably figuring out if the relationship you're in is in fact healthy for you. But after you figure that out, I think it is a great idea to share your mental illness with your partner. Being nervous about sharing your mental illness is totally understadable, but sharing this part of your life can bring you to a deeper level of intimacy with your partner, making you guys even closer than you were before!

@BraveBella great point! promoting healthy relationships is key! A negative relationship can be very detrimental and awareness is so important especially to avoid exploitation, emotional/physical abuse, etc. However, a positive relationship can make an impactful difference in one's recovery and it may lead to a substantial/prosperous relationship.

@lovelyllama13

In the past, I would push people away whenever I started to experience symptoms of depression or anxiety. I felt like it wasn't fair to the other person, I didn't want to be the "debbie downer all the time, and I felt that I needed to be "perfect" and happy before pursuing a relationship. But, I realized that's not the case and of course no one is perfect. I will say that sticking around, being honest, and being open with your friend or partner can prove to be very benficial for both of you guys. Also, support goes a long way in terms of recovery.

Relationships can be such a great source of happiness. I also think, though, that if someone is struggling and not receiving help for a mental illness that it can be really hard to emotionally support a spouse. You can't pour from an empty cup!
