The feeling of just wanting to disappear
Just got out of one of the worst relationships I’ve been in. The anxiety and depression I had during the relationship. The feelings of worthlessness, the lonely feeling even though I had a partner. And then the way things ended. The amount of pain I’ve been feeling after the breakup, but I would say even throughout part of the relationship, I’ve been saying I wish I could just disappear, not have to deal with this type of pain anymore. It hurts so bad.
@Keic God. I felt every word of this. That kind of pain—the kind that starts inside the relationship and somehow gets heavier when it ends—is one of the loneliest, most disorienting things a person can go through.
Being with someone and still feeling deeply alone chips away at your sense of worth. Then, when it ends, you're not just mourning the person—you’re mourning the hope, the time, the version of yourself you kept bending to fit what the relationship needed. That’s grief on a cellular level.
I’ve been in that kind of place before—where I just wanted out. Out of the noise, out of the ache, out of the constant weight. Just a break from feeling like this. And if that’s where you are right now… I get it. You're not weak for feeling that way. You're human and you're overwhelmed, and everything in your system is screaming for relief.
I wonder—was there a moment during that relationship where you first noticed that something in you started to disappear? A part of you that used to feel light or grounded? Sometimes naming that piece helps remind us that it’s still in there, even if it’s buried right now.
And I know this probably sounds impossible today, but I promise: this version of pain doesn’t last forever. It changes and it teaches. And what’s left… is you. Still here. Still whole. Even if you can’t feel it yet.
You don’t need to rush your healing. You don’t need to prove your strength. Just breathing through this is already more than enough. And if today all you can do is exist? That’s okay. That’s more than okay.
You’re not alone in this, even if it feels that way. This pain, as massive as it feels, is not bigger than your ability to survive it.
@LeanOnMe0518 thank you very much. I started noticing when I had to bend over backwards to please him. All he did was take and take and never really reciprocated. Even just asking for his presence seemed like I was asking for too much. There was so much gaslighting. I used to “joke” calling him a gaslighter but in the back of my mind, I knew he really was.
