I take ADHD pills, since I suffer from ADHD, but they seem to make me depressed, and almost like a zombie. I'm not sure if I should take antidepressants also.

I've been taking antidepressants on and off for three years. I think it would be a good idea to remain on the same dosage for another few weeks and see how it goes. They affect everyone differently and it can take a while for your body to get used to them. Depending on how depressed or anxious you are you might need to increase the dosage or you might be fine on what you are. They don't do anything magic, but they can take the edge off your depression and help keep your moods balanced. It might be good to keep a mood diary or something like that so you can see if they're helping you. Hope this helped!

Oh and they're fine to come off of. You might have a few days where you don't feel great but they effect everyone differently, just look up lots of information about coming off your particular medication when the time is right and you will be fine. It's best not to focus on coming off them I think, just work at getting n the present. And you can't really relapse on them as they are not addictive if taken properly, but you may need to take them again at some stage if you think it's right.

That's not a good answer. People can become suicidal quickly ceasing medication without medical supervision. One should always consult with their doctor about discontinuing a medication especially once administered it at higher levels.

It can be extrememly dangerous just stopping your medication. I know from personal experience. You need to be weened off of it just like you needed to increase the dosage over time. PersonallyI didn't start feeling any help until I reached a therapuetic level which tookmonths. Stick with it and focus on things you can do yourself(lifestyle changes, specialized therapy, breathing techniques, etc.) to help.

I've tried 4 different antidepressants over the past year until I found what works for me a couple of months ago. Most of them work by restoring chemical imbalances in your brain back to normal, and there are different groups of anti depressants that each inhibit or stimulate different things. Only when I changed which group did I start to improve.

It's going to be different for everyone, but you know your body and mind the best. If you really feel it isn't working at the moment, speak with your clinician and ask to change. I also used to get bad side effects from one medicine and my doctor insisted I carry on with it. Seek a second opinion of you feel you need to.

Also, some medicines have an XL version for prolonged release so you are cconstantly having some of that drug released during the day and it's not all used up shortly after talking it.

It may take some time to find what is best for you, but it is worth sticking with it and the process will pay off in the end!

I'm super appreciative of this thread and the responses. I personally don't have depression, but I know someone who does and who struggles. They've been on the same antidepressant for almost a year, with some increases in the dosage, but seems not to be getting enough help and it makes him feel hopeless and like nothing will work. I don't understand depression, so I tell him when he's in a dark place he can find something else that will help, his therapist will get him help. But in reality I've never been too sure. It's reassuring to hear that others have gone through similar experiences and just needed to find the right antidepressant. Hopefully I can convince him to get on this site and look at this thread, it might give him a little hope with his situation.

I hate antidepressants. I have been on an SSRI, SNRI, Wellbutrin, and Viibrydover the past few years. My doctor is now trying to add Celexa alongside my Wellbutrin, but I haven't begun it yet. Some of them help either depression or anxiety, but not both. Some made me so tired I slept over 12 hours a day and was still tired. One makes me irritable and makes me tired of myself. I will often go on a drug for at least 2 months, but when I hate the side effects and I still feel awful, I stop taking it. This has been cold turkey on my own, titrated on my own, and another time under the supervision of my doctor. I hate meds because you try them for a few months, they don't work, and then you have to wait for them to leave your system. I often go off them thinking I want to know how I really feel and how the meds made me feel. I have had mixed results. Again, the SSRI and SNRIboth made me sleep so much it was worse than the depression I had off them. Maybe Wellbutrin and Celexa is the combo I need, but I am so tired of it. Wellbutrinis a good drug in that it's pretty easy to stop taking if you hate it, but it does nothing for anxiety if you have it.I do think it's important to try drugs, but it really wears you down when you can't find one that works.
