Cultivating compassion...we can look at it like a light switch within our hearts that lights up everything we connect with. But why is it so necessary for us to know and have compassion? Where there is darkness, there is uncertainty of what lies ahead of us. Darkness, in this context, could mean unfortunate events, unexpected happenings, confusion; anything that weighs you down. In times like that, being able to connect with someone who radiates compassion could be the most reassuring feeling. When you know that there is someone out there that understands your pain, that feels it and wants to be there for you and help you get through it, the realisation itself could help you feel stronger. That sort of compassion, when garnered and watered, really benefits those around you, as well as yourself.

It is not easy; it takes dedication, humility, openness and hopefulness. But that is exactly why it is so powerful. So when shown towards one another, we could really light up our neighbourhood, school, workplace, home...wherever we go. compassion can be developed within anyone with a conscience and a heart to do what is good and right. Isn’t that amazing? That we all have such a skill?

Therefore, it is important for us to develop our compassion, to water it everyday, to enable us to light up the darkness. What are some ways in which we can develop our compassion? Thanks to numerous, kind-hearted researchers and writers, who have written articles and made blogs on the importance of compassion, we can gain more insight on how to increase it. Here are some of the ways in which we can cultivate compassion:

Show yourself Compassion

Setting yourself aside and putting others needs first is a selfless act, worthy of appreciation indeed. It is a wonderful way to portray humanity; by caring for one another. However, you have a heart and a soul that needs to be cared for too. A light cannot be switched on, unless there is a connection from within the circuit. It all starts from within. Be compassionate, kind and connected with yourself. In other words, be aware of your emotional needs and fulfil them before you could reach out to others to help them with theirs.

Listen well and be Empathetic

Sometimes, when listening to others talk about their struggles, it takes a just word or a phrase of interest, that makes you want to put out your thoughts as well. But when someone speaks, they speak out of the need to be heard. Cutting through someone’s words while they are speaking might either distract them or not give you enough insight to form your responses to them. It is eminent that listening attentively, whilst trying to understand and feel their words, by putting yourself in their shoes as they speak is a great way to show that you really care about what they say.

Be kind, stay kind

Oh to live in a world full of kind people! Kindness has no expectations of return. It is done out of a heart of doing good unto others, with generosity and friendliness. When we all practise kindness and make an effort to maintain it, we can eliminate negative feelings that may arise within ourselves or within others. The goal is to leave no room for negativity between each other.

Give, give and give

Time is of the essence they say. It’s true! The demands of life can be overbearing sometimes, requiring you to get the most you can out of your free time. But when you do have enough free time on your hands or are moved to do so, how about getting involved in charity work, service to others and caring for compromised families for example? This could be a great way to take a walk in their shoes, experience what it’s like living like them so you can better understand them. What’s also good is that you get to help them; contributing your time, energy and care towards the greater good.

Let us consistently work on cultivating Compassion and be a light in the darkness ❤
