Things People Who Stutter Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

I've virtually grown out of it but it does still happen very occasionally. It was awful at school especially in a classroom when asked to read out loud in from of the entire class !! 😕😕

@RunningMachine

I'm sorry that must've been a daunting experience. I'm glad to know that you're at a better place now. You're incredibly brave.

It's history, still occasionally stumble now, psychiatrist suspects me or having ADHD a couple of years back just helped explain a lot of things, sleep issues, stutter & extra lessons to learn to write. I got through it and have a degree on chemical engineering. I just had to learn to slow down.

It's odd, I have problems writing now unless I consciously slow down and take deep breaths otherwise I string words together and don't always complete individual letters, I just smile and apologise 🤪🤪🤪

@jesusredeemedme2425 we dont want anyone to learn anything. everyone has their own problems. all we need, or atleast me is people to understand us. if we stutter, give us some time, give us the support we need, dont make fun of us, it is simply not our fault. talking is a thing that evrryone should be able to do but when you stryggle to do that, it hurts. i can never explain this feeling but when you get made fun of for stuttering, you need to understand that you dont get it. its a deep, thorny and heavy pain deep down in our chest. we cant really say what we really want. we think so clearly but when we speak, we sound so stupid. and all we or atleast i want is that people need to try and understand us. if any one else who stutters is reading this, do you agree with me? or do you have any other opionion? id love hearing those.

It did find it tough in my school days and it was definitely a contributing factor to social awkwardness. The most frustrating part was that once I got past the initial stutter I could read as fluently and confidently as me peers. It continued to be an issue for me at job interviews and also in work meetings and presentations but it became more manageable with age.  If it helps, it probably cost me some opportunities but it worked out well in the end and didn't hold me back.

My friend from high school would occasionally stutter while chatting with us. Our friend group always gave her the time she needed to finish her sentence, it felt like the least we could do, just treating her with respect and kindness.

But some classmates would imitate her and mock her for it. She didn’t confront them, she’d just ignore it. It was honestly disgusting, shameful, and unacceptable. I wish more people knew how to treat each other well instead of belittling someone for stuttering.
