Positive vs Negative Motivation Factors
Hello! Hope you are doing well on this amazing day.
Welcome to the final, Day 2 of the "Positive Sources of Motivation" Event.
Motivation is a positive thing. It helps you keep going and doing things you need to. It acts like an invisible push you need to get the work done. It encourages you to take action and makes you willing. It is a good thing. But there are many types of motivation and factors that motivate you.
We all know about the phrase- ‘Carrot or Stick’. Positive and Negative motivation works in a similar manner.
Carrot being Positive Motivation
Stick being Negative Motivation
The way this works is- if you want some work to be done, you either offer a carrot as a reward which will act as positive motivation. Or you use a stick as a symbol for punishment which acts as negative motivation.
We all experience it every day. This method is used in teaching, working, etc. It is a productive method.
On one hand, giving rewards, bonuses, promotions or incentives is a common practice in business everywhere around the world. On the other hand, these same businesses use the threat of pay-cuts, demotion, or firing to get the job done.
The main thing to acknowledge is the circumstances to make an informed decision on which method to use.
Not everyone is the same and hence not every method of motivation works for everyone. Different people are motivated by different things and a good leader is one who has the ability to recognize these methods and use them judiciously. But before that, you are the best judge of yourself.
You know what method works best for you. Find that method and stay motivated!

1. What do you think about this method? - I have never heard to this before, it sounds interesting.
2. Do you prefer a carrot or a stick or both? Pry a little bit of both. I think you need a "stick" sometimes to or things would come too easy.
Questions: 1. What do you think about this method? I see the positive side working better than the negative. I do not like punishment. . . because of violence in my past, it hit triggers.
2. Do you prefer a carrot or a stick or both? I perfer the carrot

Thank you for a great discussion article and topic !
In my opinion...
To sustain consistently, continuously an activity, there should be some permanent incentive in place.
Even in volunteer organizations, in which the incentive could be providing meaning and a sense of life fulfillment to the volunteers.
Punishment should be only a measure of last resort. The mere possibility of it should be enough in most cases.
Before punishment, in case of misbehavior, transgression, or neglecting responsibilities, the leader must skillfully confront the subordinate, discuss the issue, and try to rectify the wrong behavior.
There is a great book on that: "Crucial Confrontations". Highly recommended.

Hello @WelcomeToChat
Thank you for the wonderful information. The book looks great. I'll definitely give it a read. And I agree negative motivation should be used as the last resort only. Hope you have a fabulous day ahead!

To me negative vs positive motivation...Every action relates to our thoughts.
If you are a positively motivated your action will most likely have a positive outcome. On the other, if you are negatively motivated, your action will have an undesirable negative outcome.
Negative motivation can be self damaging and positive motivation can be self confidence.

1, What do you think about this method?
I think it's simple and effective.
2. Do you prefer a carrot, a stick, or both?
Honestly, it's very situational with me. It depends on who the person in question is offering me the carrot or threatening me with the stick, as well as what the task at hand is. For instance, my parents prefer to use the stick with me, and they do it perhaps a bit too effectively. In contrast, my closest guy friend alternates between the carrot and stick; we both prefer that he uses the carrot with me, but if the carrot isn't enough, then he resorts to the stick.
Thank you for the discussion!
1. What do you think about this method?
Both methods have their uses in certain situations and it's good to be able to react to both methods in a healthy way.
2. Do you prefer a carrot or a stick or both?
I would much rather have the carrot used when possible. Seems like a more pleasant option.
