Expectations of a Good Discussion Leader

Hello, hello everyone! In this post we will be going over the expectations of a good discussion leader here in the Teen Discussions Project. This post is also meant to help out those applying for the role of a discussion leader so they know what to expect! For those who are already part of this project, this information is also in the primer. These apply to everyone, that means both member and listener discussion leaders!

1. Consistency

One of the central tenets of being a good discussion leader is being consistent. This means being able to host the discussion(s) you signed up for each week. This provides structure to the community so they know what to expect. However, we also understand that life can be hectic sometimes and we do not have the expectation that you will be a 100% perfect robot discussion leader! This brings us to our next point!

2. Communication

Communication is extremely important. We expect that all discussion leaders reach out to discussion co-leads if they plan on going on a self-care break. When going on a break, make sure to let @sophiasanae know a few days in advance, and give us an estimate for how long you will be gone. You must follow the TOZ self-care protocol and change your status to "self-care break" on the TOZ dashboard. If you do not communicate with @sophiasanae or other TOZ leaders, there is a chance you could be marked inactive and be removed as a leader. Also, if you have a conflict with your schedule or are ever confused about anything, just know we are here to help you out!

3. Responsibility

A good discussion leader is one who is responsible. Whether that means showing up to your discussions on time, making sure to get the rooms closed/opened properly, or remembering to sign up for sessions at the beginning of each month!

4. Professionalism

We expect all discussion leaders to uphold 7 Cups community values and behave in an appropriate manner according to the chatroom rules. Discussion hosts are also expected to take charge and lead/co-lead the entire discussion. You are in charge! A community moderator will only get involved if there is a situation where a mod is needed.

5. Empathy & Respect

The purpose of discussions is to bring everyone together as a community! Part of this is remembering to be respectful of everyone on 7 Cups and in the group chat rooms! Also, being being empathetic in your responses and making sure to be inclusive of everyone, no matter their background.

@sophiasanae hey Sophia! thanks so much for this really awesome post! i really relate with a lot of the points you have made, and I even can reflect on times when i haven't followed that! i am definitely working on all of them, as i think life's always a learning journey! as for the questions!

What other expectations do you feel are important?

I feel like one expectation that might not immediately come to mind would be self-care! it ties hand in hand with everything, but i think it should be expected that a host should only host if they are mentally and physically stable! otherwise it will lead to burnout and maybe even lower the quality of a discussion! (It's not pointed towards anyone, as i have disregarded that in the past as well!

What is something you have learned in your experience as a Teen Discussion Leader?

Oo i love this question! It's been maybe 9 or 10 months since I began hosting and i have learned so much! I learned that finding a co-host that clicks with you is so important, and that it's okay to ask for help sometimes! people are here, and that's so important to remember!

Thanks for the post guys! 🌷❤️

@enchantedlove

Amazing answers! I really love what you said about self-care! It certainly is a priority, and that's why we as hosts should always allow ourselves to take time off when we need it without feeling guilty. Everyone deserves time to unwind and de-stress! Thanks for continuing to be such an awesome host!
