Staying Healthy While Wearing a Binder

Happy Trans Day of Visibility everyone! I wanted to make a post about how to take care of yourself and live healthy if you wear a binder :)

What is a binder?

A binder is a special undergarment that compresses breasts to give the appearance of having a flat chest. Its typically used by transmen and nonbinary people, but is also used by cosplayers and gender non-conforming people.

Only wear proper binders

Don't try to DIY a binder using bandages or duct tape. This can damage your breasts, make it hard to breathe, and even cracked ribs. It can make it harder to get top surgery in the future. Sports bras can be used in a pinch, but make sure you still practice safe binding until you can get an official binder.

Don't wear your binder for too long

Generally, you should only wear the binder for 6-8 hours. Listen to your body though. If you are feeling uncomfortable, are having a hard time breathing, are having chest or back pain, or are really itchy and sweaty, take a break. Don't sleep in a binder either. When sleeping, you breathe deeply and your binder can make it harder to breathe. Don't exercise in it or fly in it. Once again, your binder can make it harder to breathe. Working out can lead to shortness of breath, something that can be harmful to people with asthma.

Stretch

When wearing a binder take time to stretch and breathe deeply throughout the day. It helps with your circulation and is something everyone should do, regardless of whether or not you bind.

Wash your binder

Treat your binder just like the rest of your clothes, wash it! gc2b has a great guide on washing your binder.

That's all the tips I have :) If you have any other I didn't mention, please share them in the comment section!

Stay safe, snailpurple <3
