Confused

August 3rd, 2016

So this is strange for me, recently it's been one week I can't get more than 5 hours of sleep. The next week, all I do is sleep. I really don't understand what's going on. Any ideas? Any things to help me sleep? Anything to keep me awake? Input is greatly appreciated

@MelissaTaylor Man, sleeping troubles suck - sleep is honestly so, so important. I personally tend to be sleepy ALL the time but a few months ago, I was staying up until 3 or 4 am, which is extremely unlike myself.

Major factors to consider are your stress levels. Being stressed and depressed often causes people to use sleep as an escape from their problems, but the anxiety from stress could make them stay awake for longer - realizing where you fall in that kind of spectrum is the first step.

Tips for falling asleep:
- Stop using anything with screens an hour or two before bed. No tvs, phones, video games, etc. Screens/lights/color stimulate the brain.
- Turn off all the lights - unless you have a fear of the dark.
- Establish a routine for sleeping and waking up.

Tips for staying awake:
- Exercise on a daily basis (not right before bed) - exercising will naturally give you more energy throughout your days.
- Don't eat foods that make you feel sluggish, like heavy carbs or fast foods.
- Drink water and fuel your body!
- Go for a walk out in fresh air, if possible.
- Refresh yourself by washing your face and/or brushing your teeth.

Hope those tips help and if you're ever feeling stressed or want to talk more about these things, there are plenty of listeners here for you <3
