Hypersomnia
I've been on a waiting list for a year and a half for a sleep disorders clinic. So I'm looking for tips on how to handle this.
I require 9-14hrs of sleep. If I get less than 10hours, I need up to 2 naps to continue on with my day.
If I try sleeping less or not taking naps, my nerves get so frazzled I develop insomnia, which can snowball into daily insomnia, which will inevitably lead to a 14-5 hour sleeping binge when I finally nod off. I sleep through alarms, fall asleep and wake up 12 hrs later realizing I missed by Friday night plans, etc..
It's debilitating and stigmatizing since my napping at work has led to the impression I drink/party. I don't. When I tell them I went to bed at 9PM they kind of react like wow, so you're really lazy! Since I can't speed up this appointment and don't even have a date yet(!!!), I'd be grateful for any help or advice.
Hey,
I don't think I have any tips or advice I could offer, anything better than what you've already tried. Part of the problem is hypersomnia can be caused by a bunch of different stuff and no one here can tell you what your condition is, or what would be best for it then. I don't know if you've seen your doctor, I imagine you have?
That's pretty unfortunate the waiting list for that clinic is so long. D:
And yeah, this sort of stigma and assumptions your coworkers are making I imagine are pretty frustrating and tiring.
If the trying to sleep less makes things worse, I guess maybe it'd be better to just get the necessary amount of sleep you need, as much as possible, and try to nap after work whenever possible. But I think this is really something your doctor would need to help you with.
I wish I had more to offer, but I can only offer my support. *hugs*
Only suggestion I have is to make sure you've covered all the possible overall health points to be sure it's not something like a vitamin deficiency at the root of it. I know iron or vitamin D being too low can make your body feel so limp that it feels like you need to lie down that much more. It is possible to be suffering depression symptoms and not be aware that you even are depressed (wait lists for depression help can be just as long too which is unfortunate).
