Benefits of Gardening

Our bodies and minds benefit greatly from spending time outside. You have probably experienced this yourself: After feeling stressed or bored indoors, you step outside and your spirits lift. One great way to spend time outdoors is to garden. Aside from enhancing the look of your yard, gardening also has a significant impact on your mental health. One study (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service ) showed that interacting with nature, especially in the presence of water, can increase self-esteem and mood, reduce anger, and improve general psychological well-being with positive effects on emotions or behavior.

Great post! thanks!

1. What benefits do you personally gain from gardening?
I grow food lol, and flowers so I do gain produce for the kitchen and home, but mainly I feel satisfied when little seeds grow into things. It's like magic|!

2. What kind of gardening do you like?
Anything but digging lol or cutting grass, I chose to leave my grass to grow and I was amazed at the wild flowers that popped up everywhere, no I have a wild meadow that bees and butterflies love and that only gets cut down after all the seeds have dropped.

3. How much time do you spend in the garden/yard? What do you grow there?
During any dry day I am out there now, at least a while every day.

I would love to see your garden! You must eat lots of healthy food when you grow everything in your garden. One day, I wish to have my own garden as well, where I would grow crops and flowers. However, gardening requires not only lots of patience and time but also knowledge! Once I was trying to grow mint from seeds. I watered it every day but nonetheless; it did not grow and till now I have no idea why. No wonder you leave the grass to grow longer! It must be a beautiful sight to have there many wildflowers and butterflies.

@globalBraid3744 one tip about mint, buy a plant from a supermarket and plant it in new proper soil! seeds never seem to really germinate.

1. What benefits do you personally gain from gardening? Gardening has all sorts of benefits! I find it's relaxing and helps keep me calm. Like MistyMagic said - It's so cool to watch the seeds grow. And you add to your food stores by growing your own vegetables. Growing flowers help the bees and other bugs and help pollinate things. Cut flowers add beauty to the inside of your house
2. What kind of gardening do you like? All kinds tbh - I think I'm happiest when I have my hands in soil. We have a regular garden area but have just started doing more container planting and I'm kind of interested in hydroponics lol
3. How much time do you spend in the garden/yard? What do you grow there? During warm weather - at least a few hours every day - but it's winter here now

Thank you for the reply. I agree that gardening has many benefits. I think when it is a shared garden area your neighbors must really appreciate how you beautify the area! I do not know much about hydroponics but it sounds interesting and I feel like searching for more information about it now.

Of course, this is our native land, it feeds and waters us! Unity with nature is very important, especially now, when there is less and less of it in everyday life. But sometimes modernity goes very well with chthonic originality, for example, [ad removed] Thanks to technological progress for making it possible to run away from it more and more efficiently every day!

I haven't started 🙈 for some odd reason I've always been nervous to just start! I'd love to start growing my own fruit and vegetables (if the East Coast climate of the U.S. allows it)

@WorriedMagpie Water! Water! Water! Check the moisture level, maybe even sit the pots in a plastic tray from meat or veg etc so the water can collect and keep them moist?

@SirenOfSerenity I know what you mean. I think one of the main things is to look around you and see what others are growing? For instance your earth may suit things like sunflowers or apples, instead of carrot and potato?

Yay a gardening thread! I'd love to get more into gardening but I'm a total novice and anxious to do anything with my garden maybe this will help :D

Discussion

1. What benefits do you personally gain from gardening?

I love doing things with my hands, so the satisfaction of helping create and nurture with them - I get totally lost in it, or at least the small amount of porting a cleanup I've done!

2. What kind of gardening do you like?

I like the idea of growing my own food - I've not gotten that far yet past a few herbs and a chilli plant that grew one chilli and died so that's something I guess 🤣 -- I'd love to get really into permaculture gardening so any ideas for a small England yard would be welcomed !

3. How much time do you spend in the garden/yard? What do you grow there

Not as much as I'd like, I don't know what to do out there and the space isn't very peaceful as it is currently - I'd love to set it up to be a little sanctuary -- grow? Mostly weeds 🤣🤣 but I've been looking after the front garden better (it's on show so I feel more pressured to keep it tidy) and after 3 years it's become a lovely little wildflower garden - I'd like to take the credit for that but I think the local jackdaw family has had more of a hand in it 😊💚

Actually had to just defend it from the landlord who came around with her siccotours? (never typed that word before apparently XD ) -- she was cool though just didnt think I wanted to garden, she was more than happy to let it seed over fortunately !

Theres all sorts in there now, I love listening to all the bees greet me on the way out the door in the morning :D

Thank you for taking part in our discussion!!

I think that it is important to read some information before planting and then try and learn along the way :) Some herbs can be pretty demanding so it is a good start

I love wildflowers! I think your front garden must be beautiful when it blooms

Thanks Braid :D

Honestly thats probably partly where I'm going wrong Ive bought a bunch of houseplants and have no idea how to look after them properly -- let alone grow stuff outside!

Maybe having a bit more of a plan rather than just going "ooh thats pretty" and bringing it home to die might work better! XD

Haha, I can relate! I do the same with flowers! I just buy them because they are so pretty and then when they are not doing well, I just go over what went wrong :D But this is also how we learn, right?

Yeah that's true!

I struggle to learn anything unless I'm doing it as well, Ive read buttloads of plant info but never had the plant at hand to use it. 🤔

Just need to sync up the plant buying with the plant learning and we might just get there 😅😂

Me too! - and I bet my plants are hoping for that as well 😂😂

I actually bought a little succulent the other day -- I've not had much luck with them so far!

Got super inspired by you and this thread yesterday and got myself a bunch of fresh potting mix and specialist cactus stuff and stuff -- and spent the afternoon repotting all my sad plants ! They look a bit less sad today :D

What has been the easiest/hardest plants for you to grow so far? (I will avoid the hard one 😂😂) 💚🐦

@WorriedMagpie

How great you got a new succulent 🌵 I am sure your plants are excited about having a new habitat!! Maybe the succulents you got before were over-watered as they usually do not mind sun or being dry for longer.

The easiest plants to grow for me were probably pelargoniums. They are not very demanding. Also, Aloe Vera is great. Not only you can use it to help with healing burns and other small injuries but it also does not need much attention. Orchids are also doing pretty well here.

The most difficult was passiflora. One of them dried out and I have no idea why because the other one potted with it was totally fine and it was getting enough water. I discovered one spider was living there and tried to get rid of it so maybe this was the issue. Then we planted 3 new ones in our garden and took them inside for the winter, but they did not survive, anyway.

I usually only take care of the flowers so I do not have much experience with growing food.

What was the easiest plant for you to grow?

I really want to move into a house with a garden, this is my dream. Now I'm moving into a new apartment, and it's cool that now you can contact a company that provides Honestly, it's very cool, because I have absolutely no time to pack things, move them, and then take apart the boxes and put things in their place.

This sounds awesome! It is always a good idea to start step by step. Recently I have been to a cacti garden and it was very beautiful! Cacti are not demanding and there is such a wide variety. Do you already have some indoor plants?
