NATIONAL GARDENING DAY

National Gardening Day on April 14 is the perfect time for gardeners and would-be gardeners to pick up a shovel and some seeds and kick-off a beautiful year of homegrown bounty.

Whether you want to grow vegetables, fruit, flowers, houseplants, or anything in between, National Gardening Day celebrates a satisfying pastime that you will enjoy for decades. Growing your own food also lets you provide fresh and natural nourishment for your family for a fraction of grocery store prices.

National Gardening Day is a call to action to get out and grow flower or vegetable gardens regardless of whether you plant in the ground, in containers, in straw bales or a square foot gardening box.

HOW TO OBSERVE
There are many ways that you can observe National Gardening Day including:

  • Find the right book, guide or resource for your needs, the local bookstore, library, web or by just talking to someone else.
  • Sign up for a gardening course in your area.
  • Look for a community garden in your area.
  • Organize a seed and perennial plant swap with neighbors and friends.
  • Join a garden club. There isnt one near? Start one!
  • Visit your local nursery or garden center—you will be amazed and excited by all the beautiful options and they are always open to questions to help you.

One thing that we do is plant our potato starters in dark pots and cut holes in them for the water to drain. This produces 3 times the potatoes than just in the dirt. You also need to ensure that you keep the potatoes covered so more dirt will need to be added to the pots. What are some tips that you can share with all of us that works good for you with your gardening?

Haha. Its still a little chilly in my neck of the woods. We had snow last week. Just started tomatoes and peppers indoors.

I like the idea of Grow Tents. I have a small garden and I am going to widen it. During the winter I want to prepare tomatoes, pumpkins, and cucumbers. I have bought special Grow Tents for that. I can recommend it to every gardener who wants to continue doing their hobby during the winter.

Omg!!!!!! I’m a huge gardener! I have 2 acres of day lilies and iris flowers soon 3acres. I have also 1 acres of mixed flowers and trees, I have a large succulent garden as well. I actually started my veggie and fruit garden too! I’m lucky to have the land to do so. Go on Craigslist people give plants always when it’s time to separate them*

What I have learnt in the past weeks:

Adapting to my environment and schedule liberates me and allows me to enjoy the hobby.

Adding perlite to soil mixture for plants which need drainage.

Trying out new potting materials for different plants.

That I can always try again if a plant I love did not do well and died.

That some plants go to my heart. Others do not.

LECA just works for my enviroment, for orchids. I am still testing this.

That mini rose bushes can still bloom and grow indoors.

That my relationship with the plants matter. Feelings attached to a plant matter.

That is all for now.
