Looking for new hobbies

Hello! So my name is Kallie, and recently I went through a lot of hard life stuff that I won't get into here, and I have found myself without any hobbies. I'm currently trying to go through a dopamine detox, and want to find hobbies to fill my time with now that I am going through an introverted stage of my life where I'm trying to focus on healing. I need suggestions for hobbies to do that are relatively calming, easy to learn, and affordable for beginners to start. Some of the things I have interests in quite frankly are too expensive for me to get started right now. I've been looking at doing knitting but I don't know where to start and it's a little overwhelming for me. So any suggestions on where to get started in these hobbies or resources on where to learn the basics would also be great!

Hi Katie! I know it can be difficult navigating life challenges and still finding time for your self! Some calming hobbies are reading and writing. Writing goals that you want to accomplish or simply creating a fictional story! I heard that drawing is calming as well. What hobbies are you already into? I know you said what you like is expensive but maybe there is a middle ground.

I have enjoyed doing simple coloring pages with markers or colored pencils. The time passes so quickly and I can genuinely feel myself relaxing as I do it.

Something else I have gotten into recently is going on long walks and listening to podcasts or audiobooks. I can completely tune out and I am also getting some exercise, sunlight, and fresh air at the same time.

If you cook at home, trying new recipes can also be a fun thing to do. You can experiment with creative combinations or follow recipes from a cookbook (there are always several at my thrift store for cheap).

@kalliekat Hi! looking for new hobbies is great, I'm the kind of person who can't sit still and always needs to try something new. Now I'm into https://betterme.world/articles/calisthenics-list-of-exercises/ with these new workouts I can open up more and improve my fitness. So if you are looking for something similarly interesting in terms of workouts, I can highly recommend it.

So this may sound unusual but I've wanted to start making puppets as a craft. I have some starter materials I bought online. For me it seems like it would be fun and creative and most importantly slow. My wife likes to diamond paint and knit, both rewarding and time consuming. ☮️✨

@kalliekat   I know this is an older thread, but I figured it might still be of interest.

Years ago I started to learn about upcycling/repurposing, where you take things that would ordinarily be thrown out and make things with them.  A good way to start is to look at what you have.  If you have an empty plastic milk jug, you can Google or search YouTube for ways to upcycle or repurpose plastic jugs/bottles.  There are loads of websites and videos that give ideas for how to make trash into usable goods, like organizers, jewelry, art and other things.  What you need to do the task depends on what you are making.  The tool I've used most is a decent pair of scissors.
