Video games as therapy
Hey all,
While I can't say that I have intentionally approached any video games that I've played with the specific mindset of "I'm playing this game right now for therapy" I have noticed that there have been times where I played video games during times of stress or just needing to decompress.
And of course, there's times where I've played purely for leisure and to enjoy my time. But, for me, there's something unique about video games that provides a therapeutic angle for me. And I think it's a combination of me being connected to the experience by both the visuals and the music.
But yeah, have any of you ever played video games as a way to decompress from stress or just to make yourself feel better?
@sereneSunset26 I realised that my son does exactly that. He changes game according to his day and how he is feeling. I think there is an element of the game being like a neutralising agent and a way to let out emotions especially anger and frustration in a safe and non-physical violence way? Does that make sense?

Oh yeah, most definitely that makes sense! I have several friends who play different genres of video games for pretty much that purpose. And depending on the genre they play, their particular game addresses a particular need (even if that need of theirs is more subconscious/below the surface.
@sereneSunset26 Yes, I agree, often it is a sub-conscious choice. And if a person is asked then they may not realise at all, but the benefit is still there! :)

This is exactly what I do every day in my fight with depression and anxiety. For me, it is a form of disconnecting from the outside world and calming the mind.

Hello, yes, I love playing on the computer mystery hidden objects games as it helps me redirect my racing thoughts. I have been addicted to this game called "Murder in The Alps", I love a good story line.
