Tolerance

WELCOME EVERYONE!!!

If a truly tolerant society must tolerate all views, even those of the intolerant, how does it prevent its own destruction by those who would use that tolerance to dismantle it? Is the only way to remain tolerant to be intolerant of intolerance itself?

Tolerance, within the framework of the Inner Development Goals (IDGs), is a crucial social skill vital for fostering collaboration and addressing complex global challenges. It encompasses more than just passive acceptance but it involves actively embracing diversity, seeking to understand differing perspectives, and building inclusive environments where all voices feel heard and valued. By cultivating tolerance, we can navigate disagreements constructively, bridge divides, and co-create solutions that are robust and equitable, accelerating progress towards a sustainable and harmonious future.

While tolerance is a foundational virtue, an excess of it can present significant inconveniences or even dangers. In fact overly broad tolerance can lead to the passive acceptance of harmful behaviors that, left unchecked, erode the very principles of fairness, safety, and justice. It can make a community vulnerable to those who exploit its openness to spread hate, discrimination, or violence. Furthermore, an "extra tolerance" might manifest as a reluctance to set necessary boundaries, challenge harmful norms, or defend core values, inadvertently enabling the very actions that undermine societal well-being and progress. It becomes an inconvenience when it compromises the ability to protect the vulnerable or to uphold ethical standards essential for collective flourishing.

For example let's imagine that we have a friend who doesn't like to do his own responsibilities.

For the first times we will try to do them instead of him by tolerance and in order to help. But this is not the best thing to do because he will be reliable on our help and will use our kindness in a bad way for both us and him.

Don't forget to share your opinions about the first question😊??

thanks. AReineRose

@AReineRose interesting post. Thank you for highlighting the darker side of an excess of tolerance - it has reminded me of the old saying "Take everything in moderation, including moderation itself". There genuinely can be too much of a good thing, to address your initial question; it's rather like developing self-awareness or becoming self-monitoring, both of which I have talked about elsewhere. Plenty is useful; beyond that however represents diminishing returns.

@AReineRose I agree with you Areine. We should not be extra tolerant with others. Otherwise they will be dependent on us
