Self Awareness
ne skill that really stands out to me is self-awareness. I didn’t realize how important it was until I got older, but it has honestly changed the way I understand myself and the choices I make. Growing up, I didn’t think much about why I felt certain emotions or why I reacted the way I did. I mostly went through life on “auto-pilot,” not really paying attention to what was going on inside me.
As an adult, self-awareness became something I had to build on purpose. I started paying attention to what I believed in, what bothered me, and what motivated me. It wasn’t easy at first, because sometimes being honest with yourself is uncomfortable, but over time it became one of the strongest parts of who I am.
The growth path mentions that self-awareness helps us recognize our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so we can make better choices. I didn’t realize how true that was until I started practicing it. Once I became more aware of myself, I noticed that my reactions made more sense, my decisions became clearer, and I understood what I actually needed to feel balanced.
Even though self-awareness is a huge part of my foundation, I think other skills in the 5 domains also help build a strong base. For me, emotional regulation and communication also play big roles. Being aware of myself is one thing, but being able to handle my emotions and express myself honestly is what helps me stay grounded in my everyday life.
Some people might wonder how I actually strengthened my self-awareness and what helped me get there. Here’s what I did:
First, I had to be open to learning more about myself, even if it felt uncomfortable.
Second, I started journaling and reflecting on situations so I could understand my reactions instead of ignoring them.
Third, I practiced checking in with myself throughout the day. I would ask, “How am I feeling right now?” or “Why did that bother me?” Doing this helped me slow down and think before reacting.
Lastly, I celebrated small improvements. If I handled a situation better than before, I gave myself credit for it.
Over time, these habits helped me grow into someone who is more grounded, intentional, and aware. Self-awareness became a solid part of my foundation, and it continues to help me show up as my best self.
