Co-creation goes beyond collaboration. It’s about “building, developing, and facilitating collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders in an environment of psychological safety and genuine co-creation”. Unlike traditional collaboration, co-creation emphasizes shared ownership and the creative process itself.

At the heart of co-creation is openness. It means listening, sharing, and being willing to let go of rigid ideas. Instead of competing to have the best idea, it’s about considering different insights to build something meaningful. I think that the best solutions often come from diverse minds working toward a shared goal.

One of the hardest parts of co-creation is giving up control. Many of us are used to environments where decisions are made by one person or a small group. But true co-creation thrives when power is shared, when listening matters as much as speaking, and when the goal is to create, not to win. It takes trust, patience, and a belief that different perspectives make things better, not messier.

I used to struggle with letting go of control as part of my projects, and it took me a while to understand the power of co-creation and that it is okay not to be in control. I think that trusting others and their abilities and skills was a major aspect I had to work on to ensure that I am co-creating with others regardless of their skill level or backgrounds.

Co-creation isn’t always easy. It challenges the way we usually work and asks us to be comfortable with uncertainty. I personally see that in a world full of complex problems, learning to build together might be one of the most valuable skills we can develop.
