Empathy & Compassion: Can we understand someone without having the same experience? 🤍

One of the IDG skills under Relating that stood out to me is Empathy and Compassion.

I think empathy is something we hear about a lot, especially in a community like 7 Cups, but I’ve been wondering what it actually looks like when we’re interacting with someone whose experience is completely different from our own.

It’s probably easier to empathize when we’ve been through something similar. But when we haven’t, maybe empathy isn’t about saying “I know exactly how you feel.” Maybe it’s being willing to listen and understand without immediately comparing their experience to our own.

And I think compassion adds another part to that — responding to someone’s feelings with kindness rather than judgment, even when we don’t completely understand them.

💭 Do you think it’s possible to genuinely empathize with someone whose experience is very different from your own? What helps you do that?

💭 Has someone ever responded to you with empathy in a way that made you feel genuinely understood? What did they do that made a difference?

I’d really love to hear different perspectives on this. 🌸

I do think it's completely possible to be empathetic, even though the life experiences could be different. Maybe you won't understand it 100% but you can still support them.

I've rarely felt understood and heard. I think with those that did, they asked me relevant gentle follow up questions, that showed me they were listening and invested, not just nodding or getting me to repeat the same information again and again.

Also there wasn't judgements and accusations, so that partly made me want to open up more. I'm generally guarded though.

Such a thoughtful post! 🤍 Empathy and compassion really are the heart of true connection—even without the same experience, we can hold space, listen deeply, and care deeply. It’s beautiful how these skills help us meet others exactly where they are. Thank you for sharing this!
