Entry 17 -- my hyperfixation songs today

I currently have two songs stuck in my playlist on loop indefinitely:

  • "Garden Song" by Phoebe Bridgers (121+ plays)
  • "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" by Phantogram (125+ plays)

I want to do some unpacking of what these songs mean to me, and why I think they're stuck in my brainspace.

"Garden Song" by Phoebe Bridgers

For me, this song is about building a life and seeing it unfold in front of you. I am doing everything in my power to rebuild my life with intention, and I think I probably have latched onto that theme in the song. There's also this bassline in the background of the song that feels therapeutic, like it's massaging my spinal cord.

"You Don't Get Me High Anymore" by Phantogram

This feels like a song about a diminishing relationship -- for me, there have been lots of them. The phrase "you don't get me high anymore" for me isn't about how a person makes me "feel good," but about how much darkness they bring with them. A line from another hyperfixation song from sometime last year comes to mind: "It's okay to walk away; to choose people who bring light into our lives, not darkness." When I sing the words to "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" (the lyrics are amazing, btw), it feels like I'm pulling the hooks out from people who still have them in me.

Similarly to "Garden Song", the music affects me, but in a different way. It energizes me, and makes me feel like the baddest baddie that ever...did bad lol

I am learning how important the instrumentals for songs are to me. If a song has dope lyrics but boring music, I won't attach to it as well. I love singing fun lyrics, but if the music is off, it won't feel as satisfying.

Hey :)

Currently listening through these two songs.

I know of motion sickness by Phoebe Bridgers, by far one of my favourite songs. I’ve never listened to Garden song though.

I love it. Not my usual style, won’t go on my main playlist but it’s definitely a song that makes you think.

To me, it’s the motion of living? Like, getting older and flourishing. Working hard to get to a place where you’re satisfied with what you have. I feel like that’s a place we’re all racing towards and yet never staying still too look around. I think that the song portrays that a little?

You don’t get me high anymore is another song I’ve never listened to. Vastly different to the first music wise right? I’d give it more soft rock, pop vibes?

I like your portrayal of the song. I think it fits? Like, the rush of meeting someone new, of building a relationship. Then settling into it and realising how unhealthy it is but also finding it hard to let go.

Couple of recs:

Sleep Patterns by Merchant Ships

Where’s your God by Cath Calypso

Keep the Rain by Searows

They are both vastly different, yeah. They have elements of electric, but to opposite effect. My brain tends to work in opposites like that (like, for example, the week I couldn't stop watching KPop Demon Hunter and SMILE 2 right after each other).

I love your interpretation of these songs! I especially like the phrase "motion of living"! I'll have to give your reccs a listen later today: I love finding new music!

Thanks hun!
