My Best Friend // Venting Story

I can still recall how it felt when I first fell in love with my best friend. It was a torrent of emotions, like the swells of a raging sea during a stormy night - both calming and chaotic at once. The two of us had been friends for almost two years, so strong in our bond that I didn't think anything could break us apart. We were meant to be friends forever. I still believe that.

The problem started when they got into a toxic relationship. I wanted desperately to help them get out of it, but as hard as I tried, nothing seemed to work. They would get angry wit me for trying, and I admit, I pushed too hard. However, with time, though, we grew closer than ever before and eventually formed a relationship ourselves. Everything went well until their boyfriend found out about me trying to lead them to the correct path.

The boyfriend was furious and immediately told them to cut me off. Instead of cutting me off, they lied to their boyfriend and continued to talk to me. I felt a strange mixture of emotions - surprised by their loyalty, thankful for the time we had together, but also guilty for causing such an unnecessary rift in someone else's relationship. It was a bittersweet feeling, but at that moment, it made me feel more loved than ever before.

The boyfriend's jealousy, however, only grew worse as time went on. He became more demanding and controlling of them and their actions, punishing them whenever they stepped out of line with his arbitrary rules. If they did something he didn't like or approved of, he would threaten to kill himself. This made me incredibly angry; the fear that he could hold over their head gave him a false sense of power, allowing him to control them in ways that were completely irrational and toxic.

I tried numerous times to talk to him about how his behavior was wrong and hurtful, but it seemed like no matter what I said, nothing ever changed and, sometimes, he got worse.. His possessiveness reached a new level and I felt like their freedom was being taken away from them slowly each day. It was an emotionally draining experience for me because there was nothing I could do.

I knew that things weren't going to end well unless drastic changes were made. I knew they loved him deeply, but I also knew they couldn't keep up with such oppressive demands. I decided to take a drastic step and tell them I was in love with them, hoping that it would be enough for them to finally realize the toxicity of their relationship. To my surprise, it worked - they began flirting with me but refused to leave him for good. It was heartbreaking to witness such an unhealthy attachment, and the amount of mental strain it put on both of us.

However, this relationship ended quickly... Man, I can still remember the bittersweet conversation where they revealed what happened between us to their partner. It all felt surreal, the stars blinking in recognition, the ocean waves crashing into the shore, just as the pieces of my broken world began to settle around me. The air was heavy with sorrows and melancholic reflections, much like a somber symphony sung by crickets and cicadas. In that moment, I had never felt so alive yet so defeated at the same time.
Since then, all sorts of strange gifts have appeared on my doorstep from the person who used to be my best friend. Even now, every random gift makes my heart sink deeper. My old friend is trapped in an impenetrable prison, only able to send occasional clues as tokens of escape. But if I'm being honest, no amount of material things will make me forget what happened. All I want is for things to go back to normal.

I often wonder why I ever let myself fall for someone who wasn't even capable of protecting themselves from such an awful situation. If only I knew then what I know now, maybe I wouldn't have allowed my heart to take control and risk losing one of the most important people in my life. In hindsight, loving somebody who couldn’t protect themselves (let alone me) was about as foolish as fishing without bait - just a fruitless endeavor.

@2hotearamos06

Thank you for sharing your story. I am sorry to hear how you lost your friend. Sometimes we have to accept that a loved one can only be helped when they want to help themselves. But I know that doesn’t make it any less painful. I hope you can find some peace in knowing that you cared and did your best and that you couldn't have done any more.
