Well the thread explains itself, I think this is a place shy men, women and teenagers can listen and perhaps help each other with giving tips and such. Although you can connect to a listener. I believe that we can talk and help through a group. Now to start: I am Daniel and I am 20 years, and a student in history. I Like Reading, playing games being with friends and so on. I have since high school been shy and it is better, I still feel that talking to new people end up in a short conversations and want to get better. I can say my life is well seeing a great girl, but still I want to break the barriers of shyness.

Hi, I'm Jen. I have major depression and social anxiety. I am rather reclusive at this point in my life because I'm so uncomfortable around people. I've been like this for as long as I can remember. I guess it started as a small child when I chose not to get close to anyone because they would get taken away from me. I was placed in children's homes as an infant, picked up by my mom at age 2, left in a different group home from 5-8. Anyhow, I feel like my life is pretty much over. I'm getting rid of my earthly possessions and trying to make sure things are in order

I can relate, although I don't know what in my personal history made me this way. Mind-numbing perscription meds are helping alleviate that feeling today, but I'm constantly running the mental check list of what I need to resolve/get rid of/bequeath. I'm so sorry you feel this way. It's cliche, but hang in there: you're not alone.

Hello, I was very shy as a child and had selective mutism. Sometimes I would not talk in front of strangers for hours and did not participate in the classroom activities. As I grew older and men started paying attention to me and I think it was because I was shy and different from the other girls not for any other reason. One day someone told me to look at the mirror to see how pretty I was. But that discouraged me because what is a pretty face when I have nothing interesting to say because I am so shy anyway. I have read a lot and I studied art, but when it comes to sharing what I have read or know about art, I think I sound boring so I don't talk much. And some girls have told me: you don't have to worry about anything because you are so pretty. But I wish I was ugly and had something to say.

@modestYard8209, I can really relate to what you say, because I struggled with selective mutism for several years. I also have anxiety disorder and major depression, but once I learned how to effectively manage those, selective mutism became less and less of an issue.

I am sorry if I said I wish I were ugly because not everybody is pretty and i don't want to offend anyone. I am just saying what people think in general about appearances.

I am also shy. Its like when I'm around people i know I should say something but I dont. I dont have much friends because i am shy. And when I'm in a place or doing something where I feel content, I reassure myself that I don't need friends. But I know I'm wrong, I have been living a lonely life and since I'm catholic I know I have to care about others. That's our main goal, to help one another. But how can I if I'm shy? I'm worried that my shyness will stop me from doing anything great in life😖

Helpfultalker1438 hello:

I have found that volunteering on a 1-1 basis helps me. I volunteer writing letters for people who can't longer write or use the keyboard. I spend about 2 hours doing this. I can draw and I helped a child who was mute and deaf to learn how to communicate by drawings. I did not have to talk and she could not talk, but we smiled a lot and we drew smiles and other things. It took a lot of effort to extend myself to go to the senior citizen center or to the school for the deaf and mute but I did it. Since I am volunteering i only do it when I feel strong enough for the day to do it. Maybe this will help others in the room to extend themselves. I know it sounds like I am extending toward people who are disabled but heck I am doing a little bit at a time and the days I can do it, I feel good and happier.

Hi everyone! :) I desperately want to fit in and be friends with people but I'm always deathly afraid that they're going to reject me or leave me in the long and/or short run :( I was bullied for 6 years when I was younger all through elementary school and half of middle school which is what led to my shyness I think. I'm a huge bookworm and I absolutely adore Star Trek: The Original Series! I love to sing but never around other people. Oh, and I'm a sophomore in one of the most competitive schools in my state district

Hello Unknown, along with the many people who have joined since last time I was here, it's lovely to meet you all( ▽ ` )ノ

I can relate with what you're saying, wanting to be friends but being too afraid of rejection is a nasty cycle. In my experience, I would hold onto all of my friends, even the toxic ones, because I was scared I'd end up with none if I left them.
Recently however, I've learnt they will come and go, not matter what I did, so I've become quite comfortable simply throwing myself into a few conversations, simply to try and build up a little familiarity with the people, even if I never talk to them again, because it's practice even if you don't gain a friend.

So try and converse with a few people every now and again, even if it's just in classroom discussion every few days, it'll make a difference. People will then see you as someone approachableand nice (depending on how you display yourself of course), and won't hesitate nearly as much if they want to talk to you. This could also open the opportunity for others to take an interest in you and initiate conversations between you. When you get more comfortable, you can join in on a few more discussions, and perhaps choosea group of people you like and try to find common interests if you haven't already.

It's just all about easing yourself into the environmentyou're in, and the mistake I (and the majority of people) make the most often is rushing into a friendship, and coming off as clingy and needy. While some people might appreciate those qualities, I don't get the feeling you want to portray yourself that way. It's really all up to you how you want to display yourself to others and there are many different ways to go, but those are just a few ideas.
I hoped I helped, even if it was just a little bit.

I'm actually suriprised how many people who came to this thread ao thank you and for your effort. I think I have make some progresprogression overcoming my shyness by spending too time with friends and family which throws you in a positition to meet other people. I still have a long way to go, and after getting some compliments make me feel better and that not all people are scary. Although those I meet I rarely see again it makes a difference. The best solution for me is just talking and eventually you find someone with shared interests. For i have changed to the better direction. But sometimes I get aome bad thoughts that I am not well enough trained and feel ugly, which has impaired me talking to a lot of girls.
