Looking for someone to talk to

Hi! I'm new to this site and want to start meeting people I can talk to. I'm 41, gay, and living in a very rural area (moved from a big metro area a few years ago). I'm a caretaker for three people in my family, and since I don't have my friends here, so it can get pretty lonely. I'm trying to better myself in many ways, and I think this is a good place to get support. I'd love to hear from you if you're in a similar situation, or if you'd just like to chat.

I’m happy to help crate queer community for others who also don’t have local access.

I’m 41, bi/pan, in a committed relationship with a fully supportive partner, but not fully out.

@newPagin7287 It's great to have a place like this when there is limited opportunity in the "real world".

@pioneeringFig3845  A couple things resonated with me.  I was a caretaker for an elderly parent for a few years.   It's hard for one too understand what that's like.   When raising children, normally you gradually watch them get better over time.  However as a caretaker for elderly, it's the opposite, you watch them slowly get worse over time.   Part of you never gets over that experience.

I recently, FINALLY acknowledged to myself a few years ago that I'm Bi, and I don't hear many talk about a "scale", however i believe there is.   Men fall on this scale either extreme Hetero or extreme Gay.  I'm guessing 70% of men fall somewhere in a broad range in the middle, maybe more.   ME, I think I'm about .75 Gay, and .25 hetero.   I live in a rural area too, and cannot host.  If I could be set free, I'd probably be %95 Gay and %5 hetero.    😮

@adventurousWest3027 What you said is definitely true about being a caretaker for a parent or older person. It can be very tough to watch someone you've known all you life keep getting worse.

Self-acceptance is so important, and congratulations on being able to accept yourself. I accept me being gay, but I still find it difficult to talk about, even with the most supportive people I know. Probably has to do with past experiences. I think a lot of people's sexualities are on a spectrum. I've never been interested in women in the past, but you never know.

@pioneeringFig3845 Rural areas can be lonely.

@forcefulOrange2220 They definitely can be, especially when it's difficult being openly gay. Not everyone is like this, of course, but there is a lot of small-mindedness around. At least I get to talk to some of my friends who don't live nearby, but it isn't the same as being able to physically spend time together. Are you in a rural area?

🧐Hello there,

A lot of things change in life, and slowly, I have lost my connections and become very socially withdrawn. Also, constantly have to face challenges in life; in other word not many positive things happen that I can share with others. So it's just a vicious cycle that does not help with life.

I work in the healthcare industry, so I guess I understand your stress as a carer.

I am currently watching the pitt which is quite nice. If you have any interesting movies or serises please share as well. As I am running out of things to watch as well 😉

@easyWatermelon4288

Hi!

I feel the same way about becoming socially withdrawn. While part of me wants to make and keep those connections with friends, part of me has stopped caring about that. I feel like I'm digging into my own little world, for better or worse. I also don't want to seem like I'm complaining all the time. I mean, there are good things happening in my life, but I wish I was able to talk more openly about the struggles without alienating others.

I try to watch things and read to take my mind off things, too. I have a bad habit of watching and rewatching shows that I've seen hundreds of times before, so I'm trying to branch out. I jumped on the Heated Rivalry bandwagon, and I was not disappointed 😃. The first few episodes are slow, but especially the last two episodes make it all worth is. I haven't seen Pitt, but I should give it a try!

@pioneeringFig3845

Hello! Welcome. It's great that you were encouraged to introduce yourself and look for this space to connect.
Going from a big city to a rural area is a drastic change of pace, and if you add to that the enormous responsibility of being a caregiver for three family members, it is totally understandable that you feel that loneliness. Care work is noble, but also very absorbing and sometimes invisible to the rest of the world.
It's great that you are focused on improving and seeking support. Finding someone to chat with can be the "breather" you need in your daily routine. Even if you are not in a big city, technology helps shorten those distances, especially for the LGBTQ+ community living in rural environments, where it is sometimes more difficult to find peers.
To start, I'd love to know: of the things you're trying to improve or your personal interests (outside of your role as a caregiver), are there any particular hobbies or topics you're passionate about that you'd like to chat about?
