My ADHD is making me hate being gay!!!

Hello everyone, I was raised in a very religious household which lead me to hate my sexual orientation. I am trying to fix this, despite the fact that I know for a fact that the day I come out to my family members I will lose the ones I love the most. I started pondering about my ADHD, which is something society and medical professionals try to remedy with strong drugs which can have impacts on the health. So I started asking myself why my gayness is any different? Its something that causes me so much loneliness, body issues, and that one day will lead me to losing my loved ones? Why isn't ADHD something to be celebrated like being gay is without being treated with harsh drugs? Im sorry if I come off as whiny but I just need answers, thanks

Hello @HoopsandGems49, I am sorry that you are struggling with both of these things, but as someone who also experiences both of these, I think I can understand. I think its important to note, that according to the DSM (essentially the mental health diagnostic book, that most psychologists use) that being gay, is not a disorder, so while it is often treated by people as a disorder or something that is wrong, that it is not considered a disorder at all according to psychologists all over the world. Now on the note of ADHD being celebrated, and not having to be on medication for it, I was on medication for my ADHD for most of my life and only recently got off of my medications. The medication is to help you control impulses that you normally wouldn't think of to control. However sometimes, depending on how intense your ADHD is, you can learn to work with your impulses and better understand them and act more accordingly so you don't need the medication anymore. However, if the medicine is helping it doesn't hurt to keep taking it, because if you stop taking it it can make things a lot harder, such as focus as a major component of ADHD. I hope this helps, and if I left some things unanswered or I wasn't clear on something, if you leave a response I will get back to you when I am able to.

Sincerely,

Jet01

Hey!

I relate to the feeling of needing answers. I just have stuff that you would perhaps want to look into, this is somewhat my perspective and not everyone may feel this way which I respect.

There's a movement called Neurodiversity Awareness which says that these neurodevelopmental differences aren't inherently bad. Does your gayness 'cause' you to feel isolated or is it the world that is homophobic and pushing you into loneliness and losing your loved ones? Correlation is not Causation. See it this way, your sexuality might correlate to your relationships or your work, etc. but is it really like causing these things? I think it is not YOU but the stigma, stereotypes and all the blatant hate surrounding it ending up affecting almost every or all aspects of your life.

Not everyone with ADHD wants to 'cure' it. (I don't even like calling it disorder.) People do celebrate these diverse characteristics and experiences too. It's the world that is predominantly neurotypical that doesn't like it – ew society – because you don't end up functioning (again, I don't like the focus on functioning) as same as them.

I'm not commenting on the medication part as I don't know much about that but I hope this has been helpful. I wouldn't want to 'cure' any aspect of you, be it your sexuality, neurotype or something else.
