Ftm Speaking to a Counselor
Hi,
I recently accepted (though I've sort of known for a while) the fact that I'm ftm trans. My parents are really unaccepting, but I've decided to not let it stunt my personal growth. I spoke to my mother while I was 'questioning' and she told me that my siblings would never be okay with it, so it was better to not tell them. However, I am quite close with at least two of my siblings and have come out to them about both my sexuality and gender identity. They have both been very accepting of it, and when we're alone, and when I visit them they do their best to accept me and call me by the right pronouns. We've grown even closer due to this, and I have grown more distant from my parents throughout this. I, thankfully, only live with my parents for about 2 more years, when I'll be going to college. Thankfully I attend an online school, and my parents are not very involved in it.
I'm also planning on telling my siblings about my new preferred name. I luckily also have a friend who is also part of the community, so they understand gender identity and questioning. We watch a lot of dsmp and mcyt together, and I have a similar haircut to wilbur soot (a bit longer) and I wear yellow sweaters sometimes, so she calls me 'wilby' as a nickname to avoid deadnaming me, and when our parents ask about it we say it's an inside joke.
My school is very community accepting, they even held a pride event where they allowed students to chat and share pronouns. When I was questioning I started going by a shortened version of my birth/deadname, as it had always been a nickname. However, now I feel like it acts more of a reminder of my deadname, so I have chosen a new name.
I've reached out to a counselor at my school, as I've already done my research to confirm that it will be confidential (my parents won't be told) and I can speak about gender. I'm going to ask about using a preferred name without my parents knowing, and possibly new pronouns.
I wanted to share my progress with a community, and I wanted to ask if anyone had any advice on what to ask my counselor.
Thank you for reading this!
@peachblue147 thanks a lot for sharing this with us!
Hey! I'm going through something extreamly similar. My parents are also not particularly accepting but my sibling is.. And I've spoken with school councilors and teachers about my name and Pronouns ( all of whom were accepting) it's just interesting to see someone going through something similar :D
