While coming out shares who we are with those closest to us, living out takes that a step further and claims your identity 24/7. Just like coming out, living out is not a required step for an LGBTQ+ person, and only you can determine what is right for you. Here again you may want to consider societal factors and personal safety when making such a move.

But, should you choose to live out “proud”, you may find that your mental, emotional and physical health all improve. You may feel more empowered and able to advocate for yourself and ask for the medical care that aligns with your needs. Embracing your authentic self can also boost confidence and reduce feelings of shame that come with hiding some or all of who you are. In some ways after coming out, no matter if it goes well or poorly, there is no longer the stress and worry of “what if” hanging over you. Instead you can focus your energy on dealing with whatever that outcome is. Living out also gives you greater opportunity to connect with others in the LGBTQ+ community be it at LGBTQ+ events or in your day to day life, you may even become a source of strength for others not ready to be out.

A few things to remember when living out “proud”

  • Being out doesn’t automatically mean homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia don’t hurt or impact your life, your struggles are still valid.

  • You may have lost family and friends in the process and those losses are real and it’s okay to grieve what being out has cost you.

  • You don’t have to be the loudest voice or advocate for LGBTQ+ rights just because you are living out.

I hope that all will one day have the safety and opportunity to

@EmotionsListener

this is a beautiful post. being in online communities has allowed me to express myself without restraint or repercussion. it also just empowered me to feel confident when i did finally come out "publicly" in my offline life. living out proudly means letting myself breathe and i no longer need to hide or censor myself. i hope anyone who's still figuring themselves out knows they have our community in their own journey of reaching that stage of living proudly. <3
