Should I distance myself or leave things the way they are?

There has been this girl that I’ve liked since January and yesterday I asked her if she had feelings for me. She said she was 85% sure she didn’t like me. But she also told me she likes kissing me on the cheek and cuddling with me, she is also very attached to me and likes me calling her pet names. Is this really just her viewing me as a friend or is she just attached? I told her I didn’t want to stay that close with her since we didn’t feel the same way, and she phoned me and cried a long long time, saying she was so scared and how she didn’t want me to leave. ( she told me there’s still that remaining 15% to try stop me idk if she’s just saying it to top me from distancing myself ) I’m so conflicted and don’t know what to do. I feel so sorry for hurting her but I also don’t want her to keep leading me on if we stay friends and if she doesn’t like me that way. I also like how things are but I will probably regret it later on because we’re nothing more and will probably never be.

@politeCat4665 I'm sorry you are being put in this situation; it seems unfair to you. I understand that this might be difficult and confusing for her as well, but that does not mean you have to deal with the consequences of her lack of understanding about how she feels toward you. With your well-being in mind, I want to say the following:

I believe you need to let her figure out what she wants from you first. You already know what you want—you want to be in a romantic relationship with her. However, she does not seem to know whether she wants to be just friends or something more in the long term. On one hand, she says she is 85% sure she doesn’t like you that way, but on the other hand, she admits there is still that remaining 15%. The reason for this is unclear; we don’t know if she is in love with you or simply has a platonic attachment. The truth is, she doesn’t know either. She is just reacting to her feelings without being able to express what they are or why she feels that way.

That’s why I think it’s best for you to give her time to think and reflect on her feelings, so she can decide what she truly wants from you. Otherwise, you both might end up in a relationship where neither of you can define what it is—whether you are just friends or if there’s something more. For any type of relationship to work, both people need to understand what they want from the other, to see whether those needs can be met. You might be comfortable with the situation right now, but in the future, you may want to be in a relationship where you clearly know how the other person feels about you, rather than constantly wondering if she only sees you as a friend or something more.
