GSA
Hi all. I need some advice on what to do. So i’m bi and i came out to my close friends in may so they know but they’re the only people who do know. i’ve reposted a few lgbtq things on my instagram story so idk if people have found out that way but other than that i’m not out. so anyway my school has a gsa club and is having people sign up at the club fair. i really want to join but i know that if i do then i’ll be out or will have to come out and idk if i’m ready to do that. i will also probably have to tell my parents and idk if i’m ready for that. i also feel like if i don’t join then i’m letting my community down. does anyone have any advice? also how did you guys come out to your parents
@ambitiousStrings1779 well, two things came to mind while I was reading. The first is that you don't have to come out at all to join a GSA club. The whole point of them is to be an alliance between the LGBT+ students and allies, so being queer is not a requirement to join: therefore, it does not necessarily mean someone is queer by joining the club, and no one has to come out by joining. The second thing is that you're not letting anyone down by not joining a club. There could be a million reasons someone doesn't feel like joining, it's never a requirement! Joining should be your own choice because you want to, not because you feel like you need to.
As for coming out to your parents, that's really up to you. You know your relationship with them the best, what feels right, whether it's the right time or right method, etc. I personally came out to my mom through a letter I wrote and stuck in her lunch bag in the morning before she went to work. And I chose to probably never come out to the rest of my family because it doesn't matter to me if they know my identity, and I don't feel like going through all that for something that isn't too important to me. So it's all up to what you want to do :)
