Sexuality and depression
I’ve been suffering from depression since I was 10, and I’m 18 now. My sexuality has been a big part of my struggle. I’ve been going to a mental health clinic for three months now, and told my doctor that I’m a lesbian. But now she recommended me a new therapist and warned me that she might not be queer friendly. I have to see her this week but I started my very first relationship with a girl few days ago. Do I have to tell her about my sexuality and girlfriend?
Hello @JenCHo
It sounds like you are nervous about coming out to your therapist. You are never required to tell anyone about your sexuality or love life if you don't feel comfortable. That being said, if being a lesbian is a part of your depression, then it might be beneficial to tell your therapist about how your identity if affecting your mental health. If your therapist is homophobic, then this could raise some issues. If you are interested in finding a new therapist, you can use this tool to find one geographically close to you. You can also sort by issues they specialize in.
