Mindfulness Daily Check In 17 October, 2017
Hello all of you!
How are you all doing? Do you have children or perhaps nieces and nephews? Or friends children? I come across this beautiful idea that I love it and today I am going to do this and share with you my findings :)
The Mindful Jar
This activity can teach children about how strong emotions can take hold, and how to find peace when these strong emotions come up.
First, get a clear jar, like a Mason jar, and fill it almost all the way with water. Next, add a big spoonful of glitter glue or glue and dry glitter to the jar. Put the lid back on the jar and shake it to make the glitter swirl.
Finally, use the following script or take inspiration from it to form your own mini-lesson:
Imagine that the glitter is like your thoughts when youre stressed, mad or upset. See how they whirl around and make it really hard to see clearly? Thats why its so easy to make silly decisions when youre upset – because youre not thinking clearly. Dont worry this is normal and it happens in all of us (yep, grownups too).
[Now put the jar down in front of them.]
Now watch what happens when youre still for a couple of moments. Keep watching. See how the glitter starts to settle and the water clears? Your mind works the same way. When youre calm for a little while, your thoughts start to settle and you start to see things much clearer.
This exercise not only helps children learn about how their emotions can cloud their thoughts, it also facilitates the practice of mindfulness while focusing on the swirling glitter in the jar.
I cannot wait to hear how this went! I know it might not be realistic to do it today (perhaps look around for old drinks bottles if you cannot find an old jar, I'm just going to use an old coffee jar... because of course I find they get empty quickly
) but I would love to hear how you got on. I'll be sure to update mine and let you know!

HI Lisa thanks for this great check in
Yes I have kiddos 16-18 but we done this many times this year. I really like how they gather all the different things they can put in their weird jars they collect all over. See we do thrift shopping and we also attend a food bank we help out with. If glass is broken by accident they prepare themselves and gather it up put it in a strainer rinse it all and bring it room for projects like this.
I also believe people dealing with certain ment health issues, anxieties and also autism can really benefit from doing this. And wow so cheap and free if you have the things at home already.
I or someone made a wonderful thread on this long ago. Ill try and find it
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Wow, so many cool things you do for the community. You're a great addition I'm sure and teaching your children so well!
I love the idea! I didn't get round to doing it yesterday but it sounds so beneficial and I had that thought with Austism, Aspergers, ADD etc too :) Love the ideas of collecting items in jars - each item tells a beautiful story too! Would love to see the post, sorry for a duplicate!!
@LisaDeRegtMBPsS
HI Lisa-Rumple here. Ha I just found out I can not pm you, so Ill ask here.
Do you know how to set your check-in as the one for the day? Where it shows up at the top? If not then you need to pm @MonBon and see how or what you need to do to have that access. Thanks for all you do Lisa
@RumpleSteeleSkin
To my understanding, therapists cannot become forum supporters and so they will be unable to access the check-in buttons. Someone on the team will need to be designated to hit the button for them.
@MonBon
HIya Mon
That is good to know as Lisa is my very first therapist in this area. I will have to remember on Wednesdays to check her thread and put it as the Dailt Check In for the day. So much thanks to you hun
@RumpleSteeleSkin

@RumpleSteeleSkin @MonBon
Hi,
When I do my check-ins it doesn't allow me to set the thread either.
@DanaMH
In which category Dana?
@MonBon
Mindfulness
@DanaMH
You are not listed as a forum supporter or moderator for mindfulness -- this is why you do not have the ability to feature check-ins. Hope that helps!
@MonBon
Let me look right now and maybe this can help
@RumpleSteeleSkin
That is so odd why you cannot PM me... I'll message MonBon for access as I wondered why I can't edit/make featured threads so I'll get on this

Thank you! Yay :)
@LisaDeRegtMBPsS @RumpleSteeleSkin Oof, I'm in love with this idea! I've noticed making crafts like this in general, recycling and of course Anything with glitter always help me stay mindful! I love the idea of sharing crafts in these check ins as well!
Thanks Lisa!!!! (As well, id like to note I love the idea of therapists contributing to the communities in ways such as this, it realy forms a community/therapist connection!)
@MissMeghan
OCD ON GLITTER-NO LIE

@RumpleSteeleSkin lol that surely can be true! Thank the lord my OCD doesnt affect me in that way! But OOF, if I drop any food while eating.. Bigggg no no XD
@MissMeghan
Hahahaha OMG for real
I laugh cause OCD yes can be serioues yet for me I do have to laugh at how I react over something small.
@RumpleSteeleSkin Oh no, no worries! Ahh I do the same things to!! :') But I still love glitter a littleeeee to much to get mad at it! Well.. oof unless it gets on anything black.. thats a nightmare
@MissMeghan
Hello there :) I love crafts, glitter and of course mindfulness so of course this idea became a firm favourite very very quickly! It's such a sensory way to describe emotions. I might ask to do it at a preschool next week dependent upon how it works today. :)
Thank you @MonBon and @RumpleSteeleSkin for helping me sort out the posts - sorry it's extra work for you Rumple!
@MissMeghan
And thank you for being so open to therapists' posting. We love the community and I know it's important for us to all interact as it bridges that gap so beautifully and helps us learn from one another - so important and I think the Mindfulness Community is so super friendly and warm and I am really loving getting to know you all on our shared love of mindfulness!
@LisaDeRegtMBPsS
Wow Lisa it is wonderful to hear you share how this SC has you feeling. Our goal is to be more welcoming,kind and also show active listening and supporting. I really do appreciate and respect each of my teammates, they are are excellent at what they do. You too are great and love your way of looking at mindfulness. As it is a hard thing to wrap around and place in our lives for many here. Lisa you have free rain in this area as well as the Mindfulness Room on adult side to lead a discussion too. Just let me know some place in the forums and I can open room or even co-lead with you.
Stay awesome
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Your SC goals are definitely reached and each day I LOVE to visit the forum because you're all a great bunch of people that put in so much effort and love that that vibe is truly inspiring as I know how busy your lives are! I can sense the respect and appreciatiation of your team mates and I know they feel the same for you too - as one I feel the same so I know the rest do too. Thank you for the openness and warm feelings as always because it goes a great way and people like you are much needed in this world as you make such a beautiful difference.
I'd love to lead a discussion - let me give some topics some thought and I'll be in touch.
@LisaDeRegtMBPsS
Afternoon Lisa
Thank you for those kind words. I am surte the team appreciates them as well as the community that keeps coming back and supporting each other. It is fine to lead-but more so it's the team and community who makes things great around here
Oh wow I am excited to hear you are interested in leading a discussion. Yes please just let me know of a time and we will get it going.
Have a good weekend
