Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. – Eckhart Tolle.

Hello, Mindfulness Community heart How many of us have had something go wrong in our lives that we couldnt change? Maybe this is something minor, like a traffic jam or waiting in line at a grocery store behind a person who loves to talk. Maybe this is something more significant and life altering, like a chronic illness or death of a loved one. In both minor and major situations in life, we can apply the mindfulness principle of acceptance.

Its much easier to go with (acceptance) waters flow rather than trying to swim upstream (resisting). Acceptance is a mindfulness component that helps decrease suffering in our life situations. Complete acceptance of a situation can save us from dwelling on feelings or emotions like guilt, complaining, sadness, annoyance, irritation, and anger. When we accept a situation or person entirely, we choose to not let the situation control our emotions and feelings.

So, what does acceptance look like, and how can you practice it? Whenever youre faced with a minor or major uncomfortable or undesirable event that you cant change or leave at the present moment, try to practice these things:

1.) Avoiding words like should, could, wish, and want since they imply that a situation needs to change in order for you to feel at peace. Peace can come from within when we fully accept a situation or person. Peace doesnt have to wait until we feel 100% comfortable and happy with our life situations.

2.) Avoiding labels like bad and wrong. Our situations in life arent really bad or wrong. Our perceptions assign these labels to situations.

3.) Practice saying, It is what it is when you begin to feel irritated, annoyed, or angry rather than reacting and snowballing your thoughts into more irritation, annoyance, and anger. You can then focus on being completely observant of your body or surroundings to calm yourself and be open to new experiences in the present moment.

My heart fills like I am having a heart attack and I don't know why these doctors can't figure out what is wrong with me. I wish I could think about something else.

@DanaMH

Hey, Dana. That does sound very worrisome and frustrating. When your thoughts shift to your heart or doctors, what do you think about focusing on your breath, doing a guided meditation, or doing a body scan rather than dwelling on what you can

My thoughts go to stuff I can control and my therapist doesn't want my mind to go there at all.

@DanaMH

Do you mean when you focus on your breathing or do a guided meditation, you have thoughts of things you can control? If so, you can acknowledge that you had those thoughts and refocus your attention back to your breath or body. It takes practice to be mindful, and it

We're taught about radical acceptance in DBT, and it's definitely a powerful principle. I've been working on this for a while now, and I'm much better at accepting my circumstances, while working on improving what and how I can.

Acceptance doesn't mean we give up. It simply means accepting the things we can't change, while working on those things that we can. It helps us manage our anxiety a lot better when we can accept those things we can't do anything about.

@RayneStorm Just heard about/learned about DBT about 10 minutes ago - I'm starting to learn about it! Sounds amazing! How/where are you studying/practicing/learning about it? Searched google to start... anything here in 7cups?

For me, acceptance is a shift in my viewpoint, like a switch, I turn on a different perspective. The zoom out to 30,000 ft, the reminder "it won't mean a thing in 100 years", the "big picture" or just seeing things from a different viewpoint helps me accept what is, what's happening. And the reminder to let things be, to just "Be", rather than "do" all the time, to be like water... these all help me accept.

Whenever I feel like I actively need to accept something that happened, I actually listen to this crazy old song. It's a Dutch one and the story they sing about is kind of crazy, but this part always gets to me:

"Als dit het is is dit het, en we zullen het wel zien"

Translated it means: if this is it, then this is it, and we'll see what happens next. The chorus sounds something like: take a deep breath, seems like it's raining like always, but it's raining sun rays.

And I don't know, but during that song I just take a few deep breaths, forget about all the should've, could've, would've, and live in the moment just for a while, like the man in the song does. No future, no past, just now.

So yeah, I know it sounds really crazy, but this song just clears it all up for me or something??

@EmunahHere Hello! :) I really enjoyed reading this post, and you made such great points. Acceptance is something I still struggle with and need to practice more in my day-to-day life.

I can practice it today by taking a deep breath and reminding myself that "It is what it is." I do not have any tips on how to accept the present moment as I am still learning to do so myself as well, but I am definitely going to practice the tips that you offered. :)
