Mindfulness Daily Check-In October 4,2017

October 4th, 2017

Hello there, mindfulness community! Another week has come. I hope you all are doing well. Sometimes when we are excited or really doing something we like, we might want to tell someone about it. That maybe the case with mindfulness. However, some people might not like the idea about mindfulness and have misconceptions about it. What misconceptions have you heard or thought about mindfulness that would you like to debunk?

@wonderfulPumpkin71

HI Pumpkin thank you for this very thoughtful check-insmiley This did make me step back and think. There are plenty of misunderstandings on mindfulness. OMG let me get started herecheeky

1. Mindfulness takes up alot of time during your day....Mindfulness DOES NOT take up alot of time but as much as you desire. If you watch or do an exercise for 15 minutes that is your personal choice. If you take a 1 hour walk- you decided to dedicate 1 hour to being mindful. It can take 2 minutes to 5 hours if you choose that. Thing is to not focus on the time, just engage in the exercise of choice.

2. Mindfulness is all about focusing and concentration....The benefit of increasing the ability to concentrate and focus can come from your mindfulness meditation practice, it is certainly not about focusing and concentration. Remember, mindfulness is about developing and forming awareness. Concentration can be an important skill to develope for our well-being, but it is not mindfulness.You can be sitting in meditation focusing on the breath and have your mind wander off hundreds of time. The fact that it wanders doesnt mean you are unmindful. In fact, every time you notice your mind has wandered, you are present, in a state of mindfulness. In that space, theres the choice to gently bring attention back.

3, People who teach mindfulness are ALWAYS mindful.....Let me be the first to clarify this myth from a personal experience. I do teach mindfulness and practiced countless meditations, but can find myself in plenty of mindless moments. I also have many friends who are mindfulness coaches and have witnessed these same mindless moments among them. Dont get me wrong, the practice has been extraordinarily helpful to me in so many ways personally, in parenting all the way to comforting a difficult client. In fact, one of the most helpful places it comes up for me is in my mindless moments as it helps me wake up to them sooner with greater self-compassion.
