Sensory Awareness Exercise

Sensory awareness is more than simply responding to experience. it is engaging with and paying attention to here-and-now sensory information. Mindful practices nurture the ability to bring sensory experiences to the forefront of our consciousness- we stop to smell the roses on our walk to work/school and moments of intimacy, the sound of a flowing river, the beautiful view, or even reading a good book, can all be immensely gratifying and comforting.

Exercise Instructions
1. Create 5 columns on a piece of paper, labeling each with one of the five senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound.

2. Take as much time as you need to write down the experiences that give you pleasure through each of your senses.

Discussion:

1. Is your list very long/short? Why do you think it is?

2, Do any experiences you listed provide pleasure, comfort, or enjoyment in more than one category?
