Mid-Year Resolutions: Accountability Buddy Check-In

Hello,

This is a thread for receiving and giving support for mid-year goals. Goals can be anything from career milestones, hobby practice, chores or even side gig stand ups.

How it’s going to work:

You need to break down your goal into steps using the SMART framework:

  1. Specific: Define exactly what you want toachieve. (Who, what, where, when, why.)

  2. Measurable: Include criteria to trackprogress and know when the goal is met.(Numbers, milestones, metrics.)

  3. Achievable: Ensure the goal is realisticgiven resources, skills, and constraints.

  4. Relevant: Make sure the goal matters toyour broader objectives or priorities.

  5. Time-bound: Set a clear deadline or timeframe.

Example (vague SMART):

  • Vague: “Get better at public speaking.”

  • SMART: “Give three 10‑minute presentations to my team over the next 3 months, get feedback after each, and reduce filler words by 50% by the third presentation.”

Check-Ins happen every month with report what you have accomplished.

I’m not recommending any specific reporting format because everyone expresses themselves differently.

This is a great idea 😊 💡

I simply wish to make more time in my day for me

This is dependent on alot of varying factors, as I'm a full time carer, so it's not in my control, but when I have time, I want to learn how to use it more productively 💙

Thank you so much for starting this post! Here goes nothing! I'm deciding on 4 goals to cover health, finances, learning and self-care.

1. HEALTH: follow through with 100% of regular checkups and treatment.  I will make and assist to every doctor's appointment.

I have already started treatment for a couple issues with a dentist, my next appot is tomorrow.

2. FINANCES: keep to the monthly budget by setting aside any surplus by month-end instead of succumbing to wants over future needs.

Example: I am carefully considering which phone to get and have paused planning any trips till fall or winter.

3. LEARNING: complete and obtain at least 2 relevant certifications to my career.

I've enrolled and began the IBM data analysis certification on Coursera. It will take a few months.

4. Self-care: take 5 hours a week to practice a hobby, exercise or chill by myself, creating a habit each month.

1 month update:

Health: I got everything I needed done on my teeth, got a general check up with a doctor as well and lab tests. Now I'm on supplements for iron deficiency and watching my diet more closely.

Finance: I bought the phone and expressed my concerns to my partner. We've decided to move to a city where my family lives to expand our support network and for a larger pool of job opportunities. There's 3 months left on our lease, more than enough time to job search and pack up.

3. Learning: No updates.

4. Self-care: Been exercising daily with walks and swimming. I joined an aquatic fitness class (calisthenics in a pool). My sleep has improved significantly. A

I got sidetracked by a rush of work, short-term relationship and then a bout of intense major depression caused by the end of said brief relationship. I'm returning to refocus on self-improvement and practice what I've preached!

I also want introduce the concept of near-term, short-term, and long-term missions. This breaks down your goals even further and externalizes the "T" (time-bound) of SMART goals. Near-term is a mission completed within the a few weeks. Short-term is a mission completed within a few months or a quarter. Long-term is a mission completed in a 6 months to a year.

Goal #1: Learn Piano

Near-Term Mission (NTM):  Practice drills every day for 2 minutes before engaging in my piano learning course for 25 minutes. Total time spent for daily practice is 30 minutes. Started August 1, 2026.

Short-Term Mission (STM): Given NTM work towards completing level 2 of the piano course by December 10, 2025.

Long-Term Mission (LTM): By mid-December, start level 3 of the piano course and be able to play 3 beginner songs by then. Specific songs TBD.

Goal #2: Pass the AFPT (Air Force Physical Test)

Near-Term Mission: Cardio for >15 mins & <60 mins daily with either Rowing or Walk/Run Interval Training.

Short-Term Mission: NTM and adding pushups and sit ups. Work way up to 20 situps and 26 pushups in one minute. Try running 2 miles under 40 minutes.

Long-Term Mission: Continue STM and ease into TacFit program Grunt-level program. By month 3, should be able to do 40 situps and 46 pushups in a minute. Be able to run 2 miles under 20 minutes.

Those are my two main goals for my personal life. There are other goals for my professional life that I'll list later once I have a better handle on how to accomplish them.

By the way, I'm not in the Air Force nor even in the DoD. I just picked a fitness standard that makes sense for my lifestyle. The AF is jokingly called the Chair Force since nearly 96% of the force are not pilots or in direct combat. Since I work in IT, this is accurate! lol To be fair, my cousin was in the AF and he was jacked. So, not all AF vets are dweebs but nearly all of them have above average in IQ. No offense to any crayon eaters out there (aka Marines)! :P
