Habit Stacking

I've found habit stacking to be very useful in building my motivation and productivity. Though I find they need to come about more naturally rather than being forced.

From my understanding, habit stacking is essentially combining different tasks/ activities so that you get a '2 in 1' effect. I find it helpful to both 'create' more time and to do tasks I feel unmotivated to do.

Mine are as follows:

  • Each morning as I wait for my coffee to boil, I always put away my dry dishes and wash any remaining ones. It's almost like a race to see what I can get done. And often, because I've built momentum I'll continue until I'm finished tidying the kitchen even after my coffee is ready (though some days I don't continue and that's completely fine too!)
  • I exercise while watching a tv show. It makes the time pass quicker and I'm more inclined to do a warm up + cool down this way. Side note on exercise: I find it so so so much easier to do now that I do e.g. 45 seconds on 15 seconds rest rather than counting reps/ sets (whatever they're called).
  • I write a simplified daily diary in my target language. Basically just simple sentences on what I did/ accomplished that day. The 2 in 1 here is that I get to practice my language and writing down what I did helps fight the feeling of "I was so lazy and unproductive today, I didn't get anything done." The bonus is that I'll also have a diary to look back on as I've always struggled to stay consistent with them.

What are your habit stacks?

Please share them for inspiration!
