This week I wanted to mention myths about OCD which will be the topic of this week's support chat:

1. What kind of misconceptions or "myths" do you think surround OCD?

2. Have you ever had a discussion with someone about OCD? How did it go?

@AmintaBlack

Thank you for raising awareness about OCD through this post! There are many people are being judged based on myths and misconceptions surrounding OCD.

1. What kind of misconceptions or "myths" do you think surround OCD?

One misconception that I heard is that OCD isn’t treatable. OCD can be managed with exposure and response prevention or a combination of behavioral therapy and medications. It can help people to gain control over their thoughts and to manage their condition.

2. Have you ever had a discussion with someone about OCD? How did it go?

I had a discussion about OCD and my friend thought that people with OCD lack willpower. This is another myth. Attempting to break routines after behaving in the same way for so long is like overcoming a deeply ingrained addiction for a sufferer. There will be a long process involved in tackling the illness. Those around them need to be patient and considerate and supportive. Afterward, my friend saw how important it is to show these people support instead of accusing them.
