Hello everyone! Hope you week is going well. Back with another comic about OCD.

Drawing by Jason Adam Katzenstein from “Everything Is an Emergency”

OCD can be an isolating and can rob people of experiences they once enjoyed. It can get so bad that you don't want to leave the house or avoid certain activities all together.

I realized the other week how grateful I am to be able to enjoy certain foods again (like sushi!) after intensive ERP therapy.

Some things to reflect on:

1. Is there an activity that you miss that is being made harder because of OCD? (if willing to share).

2. What would you tell a friend who was going through OCD (or something else that feels very isolating)?

  1. Everything. I know it sounds cliché, but those who have OCD may understand. Often, nothing really feels as it used to after encountering the obsessions that push you to get a diagnosis. Everything has changed to some extent - some things less than others - but there isn’t a single thing I do now which isn’t made more difficult (but still fulfilling and enjoyable!) by OCD.
  2. I would only convey thoughts of understanding and relatability to the fear of uncertainty - worrying you’ve done something wrong, like everyone will reject you, and like everything is over. I wouldn’t reassure - only relate and make my presence and support known without addressing or talking about the obsessions they’d be encountering (unless we’d be doing so while I’d purely just be listening and not offering any conscious or otherwise unintended reassurance).

Definitely an accurate comic. I’m sure we’ve all been there before.

Stay strong everyone!
