I wasn’t supposed to be my sisters parent
TW death/ grief/ alcoholism
Well. Things don’t ever really turn out how they’re supposed to I guess. My mother died about a month ago in a drunk driving accident. So my sister is now legally my responsibility. She’s 12, incredibly traumatized and grieving her mom. I’m a college freshman. This is just an awful situation. I’m not sure how to parent her, and how to help her with her shared grief. She goes to Al anon teen meetings, but that’s all I’ve found so far that makes sense? I’m trying to get her to see a counselor but she refuses pretty strongly. I don’t know what’s appropriate for her to do?
Like, can I leave her alone at home? I think so right??? I assume she can walk to school and make her lunch???? My schedule this semester isn’t made for a kid. I work nights ( work very loosely, I’m a night nanny for kids that sleep through the night so I basically just sleep at someone else’s house). But like, can I leave her while I work??? I don’t think so? My roommate has been staying every night I work for now, so we’re making it work. But I know she wants to go out and party. And it’s not her kid. I’ve got to move out so my sister can have her own bedroom anyway. I dunno. Just, if any of y’all have kids around that age could I get some advice? I want expecting to have to be a guardian this year.

I'm so sorry for your loss 🥺
That's so much for you both to have to deal with, such an unexpected, tragic loss.
It's not going to be easy, but you both will find what works for you.
One day at a time.
You've both got each other.
It will take you time to adapt but I wish you both the best moving forward 🩵
