BPD and Guilt

I'm currently on a guilt spiral after some pretty messed up things I've said to someone out of hurt and anger. I've accepted full responsibility for my actions and recognised that it was completely inappropriate and hurtful. I've apologised to the other person but I can totally understand that it's most likely too little too late.

How does everyone deal with their guilt following a BPD episode?

Thanks.

Hi Wanda. I'm sorry that you have to go through this.

For me, it really depends on the days. Sometimes, i deal very badly and other days it's better, it depends on the intensity of the discussion. Sometimes I can gather myself and apologize and be able to not cry and just wait for the thoughts of guilt to go away

Other days I have panic attacks because I feel a lot of guilt.

What helps me is to breath In the situation and try not to judge me. I already know that I am the way I am and sometimes I can't control myself so I try not to be so hard on myself. Maybe you could try to do some breathing exercises too and, even though we all experience so much guilt, try not to judge you so much

Thank you for your response.

I definitely feel like it is so easy to punish and abuse ourselves in moments like these...

For me I have to not only be compassionate toward myself, forgive myself, but to recognize that I’m in a bad place.

i would have not feel guilty if I was in a better place and able to cope and handle my episodes. Life is one big lesson, and I can’t deny that I’m in a place which is not where I want to be.

i have put myself in this position and I have to recognize that. Recognizing I put myself in the situation and actively choosing to change. Actively choosing to heal.

Changes must take place. Change is something we cannot control. But we have the ability to embrace it. So recognizing that something needs to change I think is how I handle my guilt.
