I tried this approach in therapy to prove a point to my family that the only way this work is if the patient ( which was me) and the family/relatives who I live with me ....all do their part in respecting one another and learning how not to set off my triggers and realized I was wasting my time when I saw that they only wanted me to change and to adapt to their nasty ways I'm glad I caught on to that real quickly and figured I should just save my time and money instead ... Living with two selfish greedy narcissists won't make things better at all for any of us...especially when they think they are flawless and only focus on me and my defects ...

I had a similar issue where being around my verbally abusive mother was making things worse and I felt as if everyone was trying to tell me that I was the problem and that maybe I am the one who needs to change my attitude or perspective. I finally got out and it took me years but I finally have my own apartment. I'm still depressed anxious and all that but it's a great beginning to get away from what is causing your distress, do whatever it takes to get out, there is always a way, a step to take in the healthy direction

Sadly those people are my husband and his mom they both drive me nuts ... If I could afford a divorce and had another place to live I would do it ... But thanks for your reply and understanding what my post was about

Same for me - and the most frustrating part of it is they don't see how their behaviour effects me. It's 'my problem' not theirs.

My family constantly hasselledand demanded my attendance and participation even though their behaviourswould trigger me into self harm, depression, anxiety and misery. A 'simple family get-together' could knock me down into the hole for weeks. I miss my family so much, but I can't contact them or have them play any part in my life any more - they're so destructive to me. I just wish they could accomodate me just a little and then maybe we could reach some kind of compromise relationship. But they only see me as the person who should have to change.

Nailed It....Imean seriously why do I always have to be the one to watch my tone of voice have to always think before I speak while the others can go ahead and act like total idiots .. That is not fair at all they can offend and degrade but if I do it back from self defense I am the mean one .. I'm sick of it ..
