Do BPD sufferers have empathy ?

I had a coworker with BPD, and she did the cruelest things to the people at the workplace. Even sued her employer for false harassment allegations. Is this normal ? Do people with BPD know how badly their manipulative actions hurt others ?

BPD is one of my diagnosis given to me by a professional, and for a majority of the time I do feel empathy. Though at times I don't.

Hi there.just thought I would add...our emotions are hightened to the point that we feel others emotions...ei. ..empathy .

When I'm around people I know my brain is assesing his emotions so I can know how to proceed with my emotions

So I'm sizing them up ..finding out weather I can be relax and proceed with normal human interactions..or this person is giving off negatives vibes ..so we can tell if they think bad things of us or just don't care to like or know ....

Yes. As a person with BPD, we definetely do have empathy, lack of empathy isn't even a general symptom of BPD. Your coworker seems like she may have Anti-social personality disorder or clinical sociopathy. It's possible her diagnosis was wrong.

Yes, actually overwhelming empathy is a huge struggle. I find it damn near impossible to NOT feel the emotions of others. My own emotions flare up in response to others.

I used to feel like I am so cruel but whenever I hurt other person I feel soo much guilt and I apologize later on. My behavior which becomes violent and abusive is hard to control but I do know what I am doing wrong. I am full of emotions and empathy but it becomes difficult to show because sometimes I feel very detached and I don't know how to response to a certain emotional situation that others may cry and they feel that I am an unempathic person but the reality is we go through emotions more deeply than any other person. There are trigger points when I get violent and i try to avoid them. If you want to deal with me properly it's better not to argue repeatedly on same thing, be understanding and speak less and when my anger is gone you can come to me and calmly talk to me about what actually happened or what I did wrong, the chances are I will apologize to you for my bad behavior.

We all feel empathy at some, regardless of any diagnosed illness that we have. For some, we may feel it more others but for those who feel it less, doesn't mean they don't feel it at all.

To the OP: How much empathy would you have if you were in trauma mood 24/7 around everyone? That no one gives a fuck about you, don't care if you are dea or alive, or truly feel abused even if they didn't?

Those with BPD are not sociopaths. But they are pretty easy to empathize with once your realize what their internal world is like.

Oh and another thing I would like to add is that a person who is healing from BPD will be more capable of empathy than any "normal" human will ever be :)

I get quite tired of people being accused when they are ill. Yes these people can be terrible at times, but they are not sociopathic. You may not understand what perceptions and feelings their worldviews stem from (empathy - yeah you do not empathize with "crazy" people. Hence why they are referred to with that word to begin with), but I assure you it makes complete sense to them and they are not purposely setting out to harm others.
