Emotional dysregulation/Borderline personality disorder?
I was recently told that I have emotional dysregulation and I have been told that it is a another term for BPD, others have said they are completely different and I have also been told that they are just in very close correlation with eachother (similar symptoms etc).
I would like to know if any of these are the case?
I suspected BPD since I learned about it a few years ago.
I have always been a person who feels intensely and as a child I was always told that I was dramatic or just overly sensitive and it hurt me because from then on I analysed and questioned everytime I felt anything, happiness or sadness.
It made/makes me feel like my emotions are not valid because I don't process and react to information like most do.
Can anyone help me/give me advice?
Borderline Persoinality Disorder, BPD, is a medical diagnosis. Emotional dysregulation is just a description. In that sense they are completely different things.
There is a theory that some or all cases of BPD are caused by emotional dysregulation. There are several other theories, and they are all just theories, but the emotional dysregulation theory is quite well known because it's associated with the well known treatment DBT. The other theories are associated with other treatments. The popularity of DBT means a lot of people believe BPD and emotional dysregulation are closely connected, or the same, but other people are not so sure that emotional dysregulation is even real.
It's pretty certain that you can't diagnose BPD by yourself or on the Internet. It has to be diagnosed by an expert professional, face-to-face and probably over a long period of time.
The symptoms you describe here are not symptoms of BPD, but this is the Internet and it's not the right place to decide anything.
